MidbossVyers
First of all, I know that Imperial armor isn't that good later on in the game, but then this thread can be about "medium armor" builds in general. During the http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Get_Outfitted quest, you are given an option of getting a free suit of Imperial light, medium, or heavy armor. Light and heavy armor is fairly obvious. However, all medium armor is is a set of light armor with the same stats as the normal light armor, but with a heavy shield. This might be a reference to Morrowind when there actually was a type of armor called medium. However, here in Skyrim, is such an armor setup (mostly light with a heavy shield) viable or will it just force you to level up too fast with an armor skill or rather armor skills too low? KingsGambit
There are three imperial cuirasses, light, studded and "normal" (heavy). I was under the impression that medium referred to the studded version, which looks like the light one with some added metal parts and I thought had higher stats. If you're playing a light armour wearer, a heavy shield won't get the benefits of your skill level. It's not a huge difference in reality. If you go with light armour, you'll start off quite vulnerable but as you level the skill you will eventually be able to hit the cap with the later armours (probably not with imperial). Heavy armour is better at the start but by end game you can hit the resistance cap with either. The main difference then should be which style has perks more useful to your play style (and which you like the look of, of course!).
slainia
Go with this idea. (this may be more of a humor reply, i'm sorry if it's inappropriate. Lol.) light armor makes it easier to run away squeaking and squealing.Of course, that's right up till the point where you turn around and shoot a firebolt at them, or perhaps an arrow. On a serious note, i find the medium armor idea kind of silly. With it not benefiting from your perk points, you have 2 options - invest in light armor and receive little benefit from the shield, or invest in both and spend extra points. Also, if you're wearing light armor, you won't want to stand around getting wailed on too often, especially earlier. Imo shields are meant for that purpose. (Of course, I don't play sword n board style, so i'm really just talking out my - hrm - here. lol.)
ginnyfizz
And of course if sneaky it is, yes preciousssss, light armour is the way to go. My girls don't do sword and board either. They will either have shot you before you even knew they were there (either with an arrow or some nasty destruction spell), or will have snuck up on you and stabbity stab in the back, or in a couple of cases, bitten you... Since my ladies are more than capable of trashing anything in lumbering heavy Armour, they do not see the point of medium armour either. But it is all personal choice, and if players want to go for it, is not for me to say otherwise. Slainia does make a valid point about perks, that is for sure. Do you use a perk mod? I use SkyRe. I made my first ever female character using it, a sneaky mage. SkyRe adds damage perks as well as sneak perks for destruction magic. It was incredibly satisfying to wipe out rooms of Draugr with a fireball. There is something to be said for being a tank though. It allows you to play the epic hero of the tale. My favourite example is destroying the DB. I stride in with full steel plate, dawnbreaker spreading the light before me and the shield of solitude ready to repel foul magics. Those poor light armoured fools soon found out what it feels like to be shield bashed in the face and set on fire by a sword!I really like sword and board, even when I'm not using a tank. ginnyfizz
No, no perk mod. I won't use SkyRe since my favourite vanilla race is Breton and I am afraid the author nerfed them something rotten.

Actually, I often go for the medium option. Reason being, I don't often play sword and board either. The medium option gives you better light armour than the light option, and if you scrap the shield for a second weapon, magic, or a two-hander, you're in the best possible position, equipment-wise. JanusForbeare
I had to use the dreaded TESWiki for this, because UESP wiki actually doesn't have any data on the faction armours (which is a major oversight that really surprised me). As you can see here, studded imperial armour has a base armour value of 27, while imperial light armour has a base armour value of 25. Since both are classified as "light" armour, there is a definite advantage in using the studded variety.
slainia
Thats really interesting...and yeah, sometimes i find wikia sometimes has better info on certain things. the creatures for one thing - uesp, as much as l like them, has very, very little info on the creatures - they're all listed on a single page with probably 3 sentences per creature. :> Anyway Funny thing is, theres a case where the reverse is true in terms of armor. The normal studded armor you find in game, vs the light leather - l *believe* the simple leather armor is better. (I just checked - it is. Studded is between hide and leather in terms of protection.)No wonder I was confused at first - was thinking of this one instead of the one you linked, since the names are fairly similar. Lol.
