BlackAlpha
Funny, I have been messing with that file as well... But for me it works differently - I do not have this at all in "Users\YourUserName\Documents\My Games\XCOM - Enemy Unknown\XComGame\Localization\INT\" I do not even have such a diretory in fact. BUt when I make changes to the game file (in game dir) - they are applied no problem. Maybe because I am always in offline on steam... I don't think it matters, as long as you have the latest game version. I noticed you can delete that file and then the game will use the original inside the game folder. You'll be missing some new changes to that file, but I think it's just multiplayer stuff that you'll be missing out on. HOWEVER, I'm going to modify that file for my mod because that file will be there for most people. So you either need to delete it or modify it. You need to do SOMETHING with it either way. Keep in mind, some users will end up with Firaxis' special patcher updating their game and then that file will be downloaded and overwritten. Which means people will come and complain that part of the mod doesn't seem to work. Then they will need to "install" the mod again to fix it. Remember that. BlackAlpha
Another thing about editing the files in My Docs. The devs update them without notifying anyone. So every now and then you need to let the game access the internet (start it normally in online mode) to fetch the latest files and use WinMerge (or a similar program) to compare the new files to the old ones to see what has changed. For that reason, I made a backup of the XCOM oflder in My Docs and I put the current date in the folder name, so I know how old the files are. Also, I noticed there are more than just multiplayer related changes made to the file "XComStrategyGame.int" which can be found inside My Documents. I'm assuming the changes the devs make to that file are bug fixes. Well, some of them clearly are, but some are weird. For example, they put a space at the end of some lines. I simply copied that in case it's some weird bug fix. I also noticed they put a lot of ines inside double quotes. And some lines had typos (sometimes using wrong syntax) which they fixed. FMod
Curious.Though if they don't update the exe or the upks, they can't introduce any new features, so little chance of missing smth important. So every now and then you need to let the game access the internet (start it normally in online mode) to fetch the latest files and use WinMerge (or a similar program) to compare the new files to the old ones to see what has changed. Another way is to run Diff3 (or again another 3-diff program) on them. Just feeding it original, mod-tweaked and updated file should result in one with both sets of changes applied. BlackAlpha
Does disabled phone home prevent such updates? Yes. For now it doesn't really seem to matter much if you don't use the latest up-to-date files, but this may change in the future. Hence the reason I posted the above explanation, so people know about it. Curious.Though if they don't update the exe or the upks, they can't introduce any new features, so little chance of missing smth important. Don't give them any ideas! :P Edited December 3, 2012 by BlackAlpha
