Hey, i can't seem to get data file mods to work. I'm unzipping them using win zip and extracting them to an unzip folder that win zip uses. then I'm moving the folder for the mod to the data folder. But when i open oblivion and go to the data files it's not there. HELP?!?!?

If you look inside the folder you are moving, you ought to find a Readme.txt which will hopefully give further instruction. Within that folder could well be Mesh and Texture Folders besides the all important .esm or .esp.

I'm sure there must be a 'how to' on this site somewhere but I'm too lazy to look on your behalf ..heh heh. Good Luck :whistling:

If you look in your data folder, you will probably see the folder you moved. it probably look like this; Oblivion\data\your mod

where your mod is the name of the mod you are trying to install.

Inside of the Your Mod folder, you should find a your mod.esp and several folders such as meshes, textures & sounds.

Make a new folder, outside of the data folder, and possibly even outside of the Oblivion folder. MOVE the mod folder there.

Now, Copy the FILES from inside the mod folder that you just mover into the data folder. If there is a folder inside your mod folder named 'meshes' copy that folder into the data folder. it will show a message asking if you want to overwrite files, answer yes. It doesn't overwrite, it merges the contents of those mesh files into your existing meshes folder.

Do the same with any other folders in your mod folder. Textures, sounds and any others.

The your mod.esp should appear in the Data folder, the folders from the your mod folder should now be INSIDE of the data\meshes, data\textures etc folders.

Hope this helps

bben, do u mean to copy the meshes folder directly into the folder in the data folder that says meshes, or do u mean just copy it into the data folder?

and also, there's a sound, and a textures file in this mod. It's the deadly reflexes mod. Should i copy that in there too? and should i follow the same instruction to the answer to my first question? (I.E. copy sounds folder directly into \data\sounds or into \data)

You could have picked an easier mod to try first. Deadly reflex is a very picky mod and causes problems for some people. Read through the topic on deadly reflexes before you install it to see if you still want to try to make it your first mod. Then make a backup of your \data folder before installing it in case it dosn't work for you. That way you can just erase the \data folder and restore the back up if it dosn't work out.

Copy the deadly reflexes\meshes folder directly into the DATA folder, not the data\meshes. You will get a message that a folder with that name already exists and warning you about overwriting. answer yes to all.

Do the same with the other folders, textures & sounds.

there were a lot of various files that were in the thing, a bunch of things that say oblivion data plugin file. i moved them all in there, and when i went into the data files screen, they all listed as different data files i could select. i selected them all, but is that a problem that they are all listed separately, or will they still work fine?

Bben's advice is spot on. Deadly Reflex is definitely not a mod you should use as your first. If you want a great combat mod use this one instead.

With this one you can click on all the plugins it adds and it'll work just fine. Save Deadly Reflex for when you have more mod experience. DR requires specific, almost anal, instructions to work. Plus, it has to be installed in just the right order. Plus, it can REALLY be problematic once you are using it, as most players report it freezing the game every 10 minutes or so. Take our advice and try a less fussy mod.

Oh. If you like combat mods, then check out the Duke Patrick Mods as well. He's got quite a few that both DR and the link above doesn't cover. I love the realism of the "smash of the titans" mod he has which causes the bigger creatures to pick you up and throw you. Just go to search and type in Duke Patrick and select what suits you. His mods have ridiculously long names(on purpose) so it's hard to point to specific ones.lol
