Any suggestions on horror games?

Amnesia: The Dark Descent is great. It plays a bit like the Penumbra series. But unlike most horror games, even other good ones (*cough* Dead Space *cough*), it gets more scary as you progress instead of less scary.

The first day of playing Amnesia, I thought it was interesting but not scary.

The second day, I got creeped out but I still hadn't seen an enemy.

Early in the third day, I didn't *see* an enemy but I almost threw my mouse across the room when something started trying to batter through a door I was pushing shut. After that it was terrifying.

By late in the third day I was hiding in closets, lighting way more candles than I could sustain, and running out of lantern oil, because I didn't want to be in the dark or in an area with more than one entrance EVER. That game messes with your head. Someone was watching me play, and I was so into it I didn't notice until they told me that I'd missed a person sitting right in front of me for a while when I was hiding in a room. I grilled them about it for at least ten minutes, and they weren't just kidding. I can't believe I didn't see it. Huddled in the dark, and I was so freaked out watching the door I didn't see the person sitting right in front of me. Now I don't know how much other stuff I missed, and I'm getting paranoid about it. There could have been some creepy thing following me for the whole first half of the game and I would never have noticed.

Ok... didn't expect that haha :P. Yes Amnesia is probably the best horror game I've played. And I'm thinking of playing again sometime but I doubt I'll get as scared as the first walkthrough. I remember times when I shut the lights and my mother used to enter the room and call my name and I would jump soooo high of freight haha XD

If you don't mind playing something a little bit dated (2001), Clive Barker's Undying was one of the scariest games I played growing up. Lots of fun, atmospheric horror staples in that game: sexy, blood-crazed vampire brides, hellhounds that you can hear coming long before you see them, victorian ghosts that stalk you incessantly, psychotic torture victims, ancient curses, and a deep and twisted storyline. Definitely worth a shot. If you're on the fence, read some of the reviews online... even the rare ones that don't score it in the 85+ range tend to have some very good things to say about it.
