1) Is experience awarded based on activity or simply being promoted? In the old XCOM games experience was directly related to activities (ie. shooting, attempting psi attacks) and iirc the soldier didnt get those improvements until you got a kill. But you could increase the soldiers stats even after a promotion by more activity. In this game it appears that the promotion increases are static, that is your soldier is going to go up the same amount of points as long as they simply get a kill and get enough points to be promoted. Or am I wrong? Can you increase a soldiers stats by having him try more shots or psi attacks or whatever?

2) How dependant on direction is cover? For instance, if your soldier is directly behind single full cover with the shooter perpendicular to them I believe thats 40% more defense, right? What if they are at a 45 degree angle to the shooter, does it go down to 20%? What if they are at a 90 degree angle to the shooter, does cover disappear (as you would expect it to in real life since theres nothing now in front to block line of sight)?

1) As far as I am aware, the 'kills' are the only thing that increases experience notably. I'm sure by now someone has found the variables that handle this and can shed more ight, but only killing an enemy seems to do anything (get a squaddie to hit 6 Sectoids with a rocket launcher and see that exp fly!!!!..... up a max of one level)

2) There was a very helpful image of how cover works. It's basically you have to be at least 1 space behind the line running straight between the enemy and the cover (on the enemy side).

The way you word your first paragraph leads me to believe that in the original xcom, experience gain directly correlated with stat growth, and that stat growth occurred regardless of promotions. Is this correct?

If so, you should know that stat growth in xcom eu (soldier accuracy and hp specifically) is directly tied to promotions, not experience. Experience points only determine promotions.

Yes. In original promotion also depended on how many soldiers you had. You never had 6 colonels, for example.
