Updating Old Skyrim -- Will it work?

I'm on an old version, 1.3.10.0. I haven't updated to keep from breaking my game, but after seeing how many mods have really, really matured I'm itching to try them out.

I'm curious about your experiences patching the game, and whether your saved game loaded, and any problems you encountered. I know going from 1.3 to 1.8 is a huge jump, and I'd hate to patch only to find my precious saves totally useless.

Also, assuming I encounter problems, are there any utilities to update or edit save files?

I jumped straight from 1.4.21 to 1.7+Dawnguard.

No major issues.

Had to update/reinstall a few mods, update the Unofficial Patch.

Had to give up on one mod that was screwing with mounted combat.

You should do it. Anything above 1.4 will give you better fps, better stability and less bugs.

Just be prepared to deal with some minor issues if you keep your old outdated mods.

Awesome! I'm actually running vanilla Skyrim, hence the itch!

The only thing you might have to worry about is any mods you may have run before that suffered from changes due to Dawnguard/Hearthfire. Most of those likely had been updated, but a few will stand out with brand new bugs, just check the comments sections of mods you have now to see if any new bugs have popped up in the last few months. The vanilla game should be just fine, though.
