How do you update armor textures to 2048x2048?

So I know you can update textures from 1024x1024 to 2048x2048. My question is how and is there any guide on it? I got as far as a member telling me it requires regenerating textures, but I have no idea what that means.

A mod example: There is an ebony armor updated to HD (http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/2544), everything looks the same except now the ebony armor looks much clearer and better

Any tips or advice in the right direction will be appreciated.

Short answer; in gimp you create a new file and set width and height to 2048 by 2048.

Not being flippant but that's really all there is to it. copy over and scale the old texture to the new 2048x2048 file. Do your touch ups (since your resolution has been increased to 4.2 megapixels, you can make a much higher definition texture) and don't forget to save/export in the proper dds format (as well as the correct compression, (BC1/DXT1 for most, but choose DXT3 OR DXT5 if you have transparency, and select generate mipMaps).

So while creating a new dds at 2048x2048 doesn't automatically make it a better texture, it does quadruple the resolution you can work at. On the web, you can probably find all kinds of tutorials to sharpen an image using a plugin or one of gimps built in tools....I just do it by hand.

Photoshop would be similar.

So I am starting to read stuff on updating textures. Is it too much to ask you if you can try to update one armor from one of the armor mod. I want to see the look difference between the two and see if I copy some of your methods. All I want is to simple make the textures look sharper and clear, you wouldn't need to add anything. I am really new with this kind of area and it would be great if you help me just for one armor.

I'd like to help out, but I really don't have the time to get into anything involved right now. But there are a ton of tutorials out there. Try googling gimp sharpen image, or if your artistically inclined you can use an illustration program or gimp/photoshop itself to add highlights, shadows etc.

I'll take a look tomorrow after work, but I don't think I'll have the time to put together anything that would do a resolution of that texture justice.
