Skyrim refuses to start.

Title says it all. I've just installed Skyrim for the first time on my new desktop. Everytime I click the 'play' button on the game's launcher, the programme just instantly closes. I'll open the launcher again, hit play once more but it yet again closes. I have tried every solution I can think of/find. Uninstall/re-install, updating every single driver and directX, Updating Steam itself, changing the sound quality, different display options etc. to no avail. However, when I try verifying the integrity of the games cache, it says 1 file must be re-acquired but it then refuses to download it. Even if I try verifying the cache like 10 times in succession there is no joy. The only thing I can think of that may serve as a clue is that when I try running the game directly from the tesv.exe file, I get a windows error message. Any help would be appreciated, I hear the snowy Shores of Skyrim calling me in my sleep.
