Here's the idea: You play, you level, you stash gear, you change the world.

 

When/if you die then you get a dialog to load from a last save or enter the same world as a new person. As a new person the main quest is still attached and completed to whatever point you were at, completed missions remain complete, but everything else active gets cleared.

 

You're level 1 and you have basic starter gear, but somewhere out there is all that crap you stuck in bins and also your previous play's corpse(s).

 

A Gary type clone would make sense to keep things plausible. Some basic mission like "Locate the last guy who left this vault" would be a basic start motivator.

 

Well thats the simple version. Bigger plans might include, named ownership of containers as your characters lockpick and steal would add some more "joe was here" immersion.

 

An alternate to simply dying to be reborn would be rolling a main character into an NPC, make them available as companions, wanderers, traders, friends or foes.

 

Imagine how cool that would be, creating and playing a whole new wasteland population, character by character.

 

I know nothing about modding maybe someone has some solutions and workarounds to discuss.
