Help With Sound Files

Hello, I'm doing an automatic weapons sound replacement mod. This will be my first larger mod, relative to what I've done before which was a single Chinese Assault Rifle sound.

My question is what are the differences between the sound files with 2D and 3D at the end. Now I figured one was for 3 dimensional sound and the other for 2 dimensional, as in outside 3D and inside 2D. But listening to the default Bethesda sounds today after extracting the Fallout - Sound.bsa I hear the exact opposite. 2D sounds like a lot of echo and reverb were added and 3D sounds flat with no echo or reverb. Could someone with some experience modding sounds please explain this in more detail?

Also what are the weapon sound file formats? I know they're 16 bit .wavs but are they mono or stereo? Does the sample rate matter or was it just kept low for the game to save space? Thanks.

It sounds like the 2d sounds have all that echo and reverb to simulate the effects of 3d sound. The sample rate is how many times the sound is samples per second. One sample per second sounds like choppy garbage the higher the sample rate the better the sound file sounds.

3d sounds are the first person sounds, 2d sounds are the npc / external sounds.

So if you have a weapon that says gunshot3d.wav which will be a stereo sound this is the sound the player will hear when using the weapon, and gunshot2d.wav will be a mono sound to allow direction on sound and the player will hear when the AI uses the weapons etc etc.

I recommend a sample rate of 44,100

Awesome thank you so much. I also have to fix the previous mod I made.

Is there any info on encode properties anywhere? Like say for the weapons (which I now know thanks to you guys) and weapons sound effects. For example the sound of a pistol or rifle jamming what would it be? Would it be a stereo sound or mono? Thanks.

*EDIT* Nevermind I figured it out from the default Bethesda Jam\Relead sounds. They are 16 bit 44,100 Mono. Thanks.
