Skree000
Polycount is a really good site also for learning! i think its www.polycount.net Really supportive people in the forums that will critique your stuff and help you learn ! (and you can read other peoples posts because everyone asks the same kinds of questions and it will help train your eye for spotting 'what is high quality' in 3d and 2d :)

cj577
Years ago, I was doing some modeling for Counter Strike using MilkShape3d and I tried to pick up Fallout 3 modeling with both Max and Maya, but I'm not progressing too well. I notice a lot of people use Maya here and I was wondering if any of you with some experience could point me in the direction of some good learning tools? My projects are just wasting graphite... I'm basically a beginner at this point. I tried MilkShape again, but found it unintuitive and fairly stiff.for Maya or Max do some googling theres some really good tutorial sites out there for both Maya and Max also for Blender
MRG
if you want real help with that join me on xfire at intergang www.xfire.com, you'll also need to get TeamViewer from www.teamviewer.com. If your willing to learn I will teach. If you are serious, then I would like to sit in on a lesson. I would really like to learn how to make custom weapon for FO3. An architectural engineering friend, has allowed me to use his 2009 version of 3Ds Max. Is this a program that you know how to use &/or will this allow me to make custom weapons? Thanks! -MRG
Skree000
3ds max is awesome.3dsmax 9 is better though because in 2009 they broke the Multiple UV channels feature, which was totally not requiring a fix. Here at work I curse the gods daily for that, Max 2009 SHOULD be the all inclusive program, but its flawed until they fix that aspect I cant use it =( Max as a program is great though, just one tiny bug in 2009 that drives me nuts, but otherwise its great Everything youll ever need to do or make in a videogame, Max can do for you, and quite well actually. The only exception might be custom rigs for animation, maya has better tools and support for thos since it was built for that... but then Max has the biped which is really easy to learn if you are new to animating. max ftw. I took a random weapon mod I had in my FO3 download folder, extracted to my desktop, installed the .nif tools for 3Ds Max & went in to take a look at it. Rather interesting. I couldn't make a single noticeable difference to it, but then again I had absolutely no idea what I was doing. I wish they had a noob version. silerfire
Seconded. After going through a lot of the software options and learning tools, Blender seems to be the easiest to learn for me. I found some good PDF tutorials called Blender 3d: Noob to Pro. They've been working pretty well for me so far.
