How do you make custom textures?

This is my first attempt at modding, i think i figured out how to change stats, and have designed a couple good looking gun nif files but i dont how do i paint them with textures?

any help?

dependsw on the prog you use... its normally called uvw mapping... or unwrap uvw, or somin... make a google search on "texture mapping" and "tutorial" and teh name of your prog or just click your way through the stickies here
