Skyrim AI - How Does It Work? Where To Start?

Hi, I'm a Unity developer and I'm working on ai right now. I have just finished the animation part for spellcasters. Before moving on, I'd like to get some ideas from my favourite game which pretty much serves as template.

 

For example, I'm having a hard time integrating weapons and spells and make them work well together. I'd like to know how Skyrim handles this. When I play SkyrimVR it all looks so smooth how NPCs switch their spells and swap spells for weapons, etc. A lot of question came up recently, I.e.:

 

Are spells handled as weapons?

Are spells and weapons handled as items?

How does the ai know what spell to select?

How does it decide which spell to swap for another more important spell?

When looking at mages in action, I see no patterns in their combat movement. They keep their distance but everything else seems to be random no?

Etc., etc.

 

Is it possible to take a peek at the essential code that controls the detailed NPC behaviours in the CK like the target selection/decision-making process, animation/sound/action relationships (how does an arrow impact sound know when to play)?

 

I'd be very happy for any insight!
