kapruitt85
First and foremost, system specs: CPU: i7 CPU K [email protected] GHzGPU: msi Nvidia GeFore 870 GTXRam: 8GBOS: Windows 8 List of mods:All mods listed in the latest S.T.E.P PDFDimonized UNP w/ various armor modsApacheHairThe Ashen Race, The Lunari Race, The Temptress Race mods And that's really about it as far as mods go. While I'm not an expert modder, I am very cautious about selecting mods that do not conflict with one another and that are stable. In addition to the above, I also utilize ENB injector. I think it's the SuperRL ENB. In an attempt to provide as much detail about the problem as possible, I'll try to recount the specifics about my CTDs. Most notably, I experience frequent CTDs at night. If it isn't a CTD, I do notice a drop in frame rate at night. I have a feeling this due to a combination of things (Enhanced Sky, Laterns along the road, plus the ENB) CTD occurs approaching Solitude. At first I chalked this up to the above (I was traveling there at night), and after multiple unsuccessful attempts to get there, I tried during the day, with the same result. Noticed the CTD happened at the same general spot. The only modification that I've made to Solitude was the Parallax Solitude included in the STEP PDF. Random CTDs in open wilderness. I assumed this was the result of GPU overheating, but after checking the temp after a couple of crashes, I never once saw it rise above 70C. And the last CTD that I've experienced (resulting in me getting frustrated enough to delete all the content and reinstall): CTD occurring trying to exit Eldergleam Sanctuary. The first attempt to exit was fine, exterior cell loaded with no issue. Fast traveled to Whiterun to turn in the quest, noticed NPC skin textures hadn't loaded, nor had the straw textures on the roofs of the market stalls. Game still ran fine. Exited Whiterun to exterior cell noticed black patches across the landscape where apparently textures hadn't loaded. Multiple reloads to previous saves did not address the issue. Exited Skyrim, reloaded to save inside Eldergleam, CTD every time I tried to exit to exterior cell. After that, I tried turning off the ENB, changing graphic settings, still couldn't exit. Now, with all that being said, Vanilla Skyrim works like a charm, but none of us are interested in vanilla skyrim, right? >.> I guess what I'm looking for is any information on how I can lessen the occurrences of CTDs. Like I state above, I stay true to the STEP guide as far as mods go, minus the body mods. I know that STEP isn't perfect, but I don't think I should be experiencing as many CTDs as I am
Bradster123456
Skyrim, or TESV.exe, is still an *32 program, and as such cannot have more than 4GB of RAM allocated to it, even with special 3rd party software. Your computer's power is also irrelevant; there is a 4GB RAM limit for textures, etc. When this limit is exceed, you CTD. I have also experienced this problem; whenever I would defeat Potema's inner council, the crazy particle effects and textures of her spirit rushing to the door would give me a CTD 100% of the time. This, however, was fixed with a particular mod called "Optimizer textures". But, personally, I would first try using the console to teleport myself inside solitude [ ie "coc solitude"] and see if it still crashes. Hope this helps. ~Brad

Aliera Caine
@kapruitt85: First off, this is just info, not a solution. Windows 8 is a new animal for Skyrim. Notice the bar charts on how Skyrim runs comparing different Windows versions: http://hardforum.com...d.php?t=1651017 Windows 7 is still the most stable platform for it. So I was wondering if you have always run the game on Windows 8? And adding a lot of mods to the mix including HD textures might pull on your performance in ways the STEP guide could not have predicted. There are been quite a few posts of late involving Windows 8. You may be a pioneer in Skyrim and Windows 8 for the rest of us.-- As far as CTDs in a certain locale, this might be a result of something you removed but is still in the save you are using. There is more info on this in Bben's troubleshooting guide: http://s1.zetaboards.../4841774/1/#new--I can't be of much help with ENB, Parallax and NPC skin textures, but hopefully someone else can. Have you tried playing without Parallax Solitude to test your theory?
bben46
We really don't have much data on how win8 affects the game yet. But I suspect it will run it just fine. Tweak Guides is nearing completion on a Win8 optimization guide. - expected release sometime this week. I expect that to help quite a bit as the author of Tweak Guides, Koroush Ghazi, is focused on getting games to work better. And in my opinion his is the premier guide to tweaking Operating systems, video cards and Games. Basic instructions for getting a game to work better.Optimize the Operating System first, then the video card and last the individual game.http://www.tweakguides.com/
