Weird environment effects

Hello everyone, I have one weird bug on my game that only appeared after I completed the 1st quest of the companions and went back to Whiterun.

First, I had a weird fog like texture everywhere and then I had this instead of the lensflare effect :

Yeah, so I had a similar issue with light glow effects inside snow caves. When looking at light sources, especially cave entrances, I would get a solid square of light surrounding those light sources.

The most likely cause of your issue is that a file in data\textures\effects has some problematic transparency issues.

How could this happen? Two ways I can think of off the top of my head: (1) you installed a new mod that changed some effects textures, but the mod already had isses, or (2) you used a texture optimizing utility on the textures in textures\effects and it didn't play nicely with a texture's transparency.

(1) can happen pretty easily because with mods that are textures only, people install them sometimes in the middle of a game since it won't mess up load order.

You can diagnose this for sure on your end by unticking mods that change the textures\effects folder until you find the culprit. Or in my case, since I have loose files, I temporarily renamed the effects folder to "_effects" basically forcing the game to use vanilla resources instead of those files. When I saw in game that this fixed my problem, I then had proof that some file in the effects folder was my issue. From there it was trial and error, though you should be able to look at the file previews and get a good idea of what file is the problem.

Depending on your mod setup and weather mods, the texture path of the problem file might be different for you, but effects is a good place to start.

What is pretty certain is that it's not related to the quest you finished. You are likely noticing it just now because you happened to see a weather type where the effect was used.
