CTD when equipping helmet from Skyrim Knights 2018

specifically all types of "imperial plated helmet". from what i understand the original version for oldrim had a problem where the imperial helmets just look like regular steel plated helmets from the mod, however at least equipping them doesn't cause an instant ctd. i've had a look in xedit but i'm not a modder and as far as i can tell everything looks fine, the paths for models all point to the correct place and the other alternate helmet, a horned variety, shows up fine, it's just the imperial one.

i guess what i'm looking for here is some help in getting the correct helmet to show up in oldrim, because my assumption is that if i can figure out why they don't show up in oldrim, that may also fix the problem with ctds in sse, since it is just a direct port from oldrim

if it helps, here's an image of what the imperial helmet should look like

and here's the regular helmet that shows up in oldrim instead when you equip the imperial helmet

there's no screenshot for the ctds in sse unless i can attach a gif or video of me equipping a helmet and instantly crashing.

Here is my best guess and a possible fix. I suspect that the mesh itself for this particular item is not compatible with Skyrim SE and was never optimized for SE. I also suspect that the mesh itself had some inherent issues in Oldrim; it looks to me like the helmet in Oldrim was actually displaying just fine, but some PARTS of the mesh like the crest were not.

So we have a situation where the mesh was a problem from the get-go, even in Oldrim. That means that my solution may or may not help you, if the mesh is just too borked to work.

Grab the mod SSE NIF Optimizer here on the Nexus. Put JUST the problematic helmet mesh files into a working folder somewhere and use Nif Optimizer to optimize them for SSE. Put the meshes back where they belong, and see if they work.

Nif Optimizer is a tool that (among other things) can fix mesh issues and it's used to port meshes for use in SSE.

Good luck! Let me know how it works out.

no luck i'm afraid; i've tried using the regular options in nif optimiser and ticking the 'head parts only' option, neither help. i've just run the meshes and textures through nifscan as well, no errors found :c thanks for your help tho

Yeah, sometimes there's no way to fix things for us normal guys. I spent two days trying to fix a messed up armor set; the creator had built a custom physics system into it with extra .xmls and everything. The helmet, cloth parts of the armor, and custom body were all designed to be used together... and it was an Oldrim mod. There was just nothing I could do.

So I pulled a Melvinius.

I manually replaced all the meshes with armors from other mods that I liked (if you do this, make sure to install all the textures for the new meshes too). Voila! Functional mod, maybe a bit different than it was intended to be, but at least it's usable without CTDs.
