The archiveinvalidation.txt is the file that tells the game where new files are that it should overwrite the old ones with. When a file is entered into this file the game will ignore the original file in the main game files and use the one that the user has placed into the fallout directory. For example if I wanted to replace the 10mm pistol texture with a custom one I would type "textures/weapons/1handpistol/10mmpistol.dds" (I forget if it is supposed to be / or \ ). This causes the game to look in the "textures/weapons/1handpistol" folder in your fallout data directory for the texture and not in it's own files.

This file should be placed in the Fallout 3 directory (there is some confusion with this so I copied this file into my data folder as well).

In order for this file to work the fallout ini needs to be modified. (binvalidateolderfiles needs to be changed to 1)
