How exactly do racemenu .jslot files work?

So I am trying to make my own preset.

 

I noticed you can export the head file as a .nif

and you can also export the preset as a .jslot file

 

if my character has a custom head to I have to export the .nif file as well to use it?

 

are the head nifs stored in the jslot file too?
