SirMalakye
Hello everyone, for the holidays my family wants to get me something to upgrade my pc and I only have a 100 dollar limit give or take. I was thinking (if I could) of getting a better cpu but I wanted the opinion of the community. Also I am not very computer savoy and while I have someone who can install the hardware for me I have to hunt it down myself. Here are my pc specs OS:Windows ultimate 32 bit OSGPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTS 450 1 GBRAM 4 gigs but only 3.5 usable due to OSCPU AMD Athlon 7750 Black Edition 2.70 GHz Dual Core Socket AM2+ (940) I will also provide my DXDiag report if that helps any ------------------System Information------------------Time of this report: 12/16/2012, 07:44:43 Machine name: MIKE-PC Operating System: Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit (6.1, Build 7600) (7600.win7_gdr.120830-0334) Language: English (Regional Setting: English)System Manufacturer: Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd. I am obviously looking to improve a gaming rig (I thought id mention that) and giving that I am on a tight budget I want to get the biggest bang for my buck so if anyone thinks I should go a different rout instead of a cpu please say so but I would think thats my best bet for upgrading. Thank you for your time and responses.
acidzebra
I would probably sink it into a 64-bit copy of win and a 4/8 Gig stick of ram.
FMod
64 bits does nothing for games. The average difference is zero - somewhere 1% slower, elsewhere 1% faster. Even extra RAM has no effect to speak of. Not to mention DDR2 this motherboard uses is obsolete. There are no 8GB DDR2 desktop sticks and very few 4GB ones. And there is nowhere to plug them in, it only has two slots; you'd have to drop $200 on 2x4GB to increase memory size. Which won't even have any effect most of the time and a couple % when it does. The CPU support of this board is limited. Some of the same cores are not listed as supported; they are likely to work, but not guaranteed. http://www.gigabyte.com/support-downloads/cpu-support-popup.aspx?pid=3262 It seems that Phenom II X4 955 is the supported maximum. No particular reason for any higher not to work, but still, it's AM3 CPU on AM2+ socket. Here is one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103808 Note that officially it's not a supported CPU. I can not be 100% certain that it will work, although I'd give it about 90%, it has no reason not to. But you might need to set up speeds in BIOS yourself. If you want to be sure, any Phenom II X4 945 or 955 normal (not BE) are on the supported list.
acidzebra
What 64 bits does for games is get rid of the 4 (actually less) Gb memory restriction - 4 GB which is also lessened by running windows, background processes, and shared video memory (if any). Swapping = incredibly decreased performance. Plus, going forward, you can move that OS to your new rig. A new CPU on an old mobo will just sit idling most of the time anyway (like in all likelihood his old CPU was), most recent CPUs are not being taxed by games; the focus there is on video cards and available RAM. A CPU on that mobo is just not a good investment, I think. YMMV. There is a reason Beth patched Skyrim to be LAA, and memory requirements for future games will only increase. Memory which on a 32-bit rig you'll be sharing with windows and any running processes and services. 32-bit just doesn't cut it anymore. That said, I don't know that mobo so if you don't have any slots available or can't source ram for cheap, my advice is worthless. If that is the case, I would actually stash my money in a bank account, save up some more, and upgrade mobo+cpu+ram at some future point. Run your game, keep performance monitor running in the background, and keep an eye on your CPU. I doubt you will see it redline at any point. FMod
The restriction is really 2GB, not 4GB (which except when LAA). And a 64-bit OS doesn't get rid of the 4GB restriction. You need a 64-bit game to take advantage of extra memory. Of which there is, as of this moment, 0. All games existing today have been designed as 32-bit, using under 2GB of memory. It's impossible to drive them into swapping on a 32-bit system with 4GB, because Windows will always get them their 2GB and the rest they can't use. LAA makes games aware of it, but doesn't rewrite the code. (Generally, it's almost impossible to drive Windows into swapping on a 4GB system, unless running a Virtual PC on it). There are a few games/engines that can be compiled in 64 bits, like Crysis and Source. These builds however show remarkably little difference - +/-3% - from their 32-bit builds. No advantage. If buying an OS right now, the case for a 64-bit version is clear, but replacing a 32-bit Ultimate with 64-bit will incur around $100 in cost. That's a steep price for 0% gain, so why do it, just to make a point about 64 bits? OS replacement should be the last thing on any upgrade list, it brings the least improvement, and in this case none at all. At least XP->W7 can be understood if you need DX10 and DX11. We're not talking about the merits of 64-bit in general, but about this one situation. The part that needs replacing is the CPU, and it will work OK even on a cheap board - the memory controller is built in, the chipset only affects peripheral links. acidzebra
...the TOTAL 4gb memory restriction. Of your entire machine. I am not talking about 64 bit games. I don't know why you keep going on about that. My entire point is, and has been for this thread, is that if you're going to share your total of <4GB RAM with a game addressing up to 2 OR 4 GB (LAA, which many newer games are), your performance is going to be hurt by RAM restrictions. And its very possible to drive windows into swapping, you see it in his dx log. As for win7 x64 costing $100, you don't need super-ultimate final edition or whatever. In fact, THAT (much like his current ultimate edition) is a waste of money. Home premium provides everything most people need, and can be had for around $70. A generic stick of 4 GB RAM can be had for around 40, putting him around his $100 price target. That is, assuming he has slots free - which I already mentioned earlier. FMod
...the TOTAL 4gb memory restriction. Of your entire machine. It doesn't matter. Once you run an exclusive mode application with high demands like a game, Windows throws everything it can out to provide as much memory to it as possible. 2GB is pretty much guaranteed. 3GB very likely. And, speaking about more than 2GB, few games even have the LAA flag set. I'm not sure if any of these that actually exceeds 2GB usage unless loaded with mods. And you usually get 3GB available. Can games exceed 3GB? Maybe, but I haven't seen it. And anything that can will bring his system to a screeching halt long before memory becomes a concern. Here is what Boris Vorontsov (the creator of ENB, you can trust him if you don't trust me) had to say on it, regarding Skyrim:http://enbseries.enbdev.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=730Game can't use more than 3 gb memory, patch 4 gb (and all latest game versions have largeaddressaware enabled) not work with it above 3 gb limit, it crashes (internal engine issues) and own game memory manager eat about 1 gb. So, amount of texture or geometry in video memory can't be above 2 gb limit, it's simply impossible in this game. Finally, did you know that you can put a paging file on a RAM drive in invisible memory to bypass the 4GB limit? So if you do have a 32-bit OS and 8GB of RAM, you put the paging file there and the OS gets 8GB to play with. Windows virtual memory management is completely opaque to applications; they will never know the difference. Not games. A generic stick of 4 GB RAM can be had for around 40, putting him around his $100 price target. His system uses DDR2 RAM, not DDR3. A 4GB stick of DDR2 costs about $100. That would be possibly the second worst use of a Benjamin, right after the illicit yet glamorized one. And its very possible to drive windows into swapping, you see it in his dx log.DxDiag's "page file" does not show what it seems to. For instance, I have 32 GB of RAM installed and a 16-8192 MB pagefile on SSD, of which currently there is 16 MB allocated. That's correct, I have a 16 MB pagefile. And no, there are no hidden ones. DxDiag shows that I have "Page file: 28571MB used, 14434MB available". But wait! How?! What dark wizardry fit 28 GB into a 16 MB file?I'm almost tempted not to provide the answer, as it should be obvious already. But, just in case, here it is: "Page file" in dxdiag shows the total virtual memory, which includes both physical RAM and pagefile combined. Yes, I do have more RAM than I say is needed, but you can see that I actually use it. It is used by a very low-level utility that doesn't really care if Windows can see it, by the way, so I could use it even on a 32-bit OS if I decided to. The trick is, 32-bit CPU aren't really limited to 4GB; they can address 32GB, but since XP SP2 Microsoft neatly removed PAE support from non-server 32-bit versions to promote 1) 64-bit versions, 2) said server versions. There is plenty of things you can do with OS-invisible memory, including bypassing the restriction above and just using it as main memory. The only real need for a 64-bit version is when you decide to run real 64-bit applications. Ones written as 64-bit from the get go, not just alternate builds.
