Have you installed any patches? Mods? Shivering Isles? or anything else? If you have a 64 bit version of Vista there are other problems.

Try it using just the vanilla game first. You must have the disk in for it to work also. There are some no CD cracks, but some don't work. Also, some pirate versions won't work and may infect your computer with a virus or other malware.

Post your system specs, Are you running a laptop or table top? processor, video card, video ram, system ram, audio card, Version of Vista and anything else about your system.

Are you running any other programs in the background? IM programs are especially bad about causing problems with Oblivion.

You must be signed on as an administrator to run Oblivion. Check that first.

You do not list the video. Usually on a laptop the video steals its memory from the system memory, That will reduce the available memory for playing games. But Oblivion should work on less than 1G of RAM.

I recommend going to the Microsoft update site and downloading all updates, including SP2 & SP3. You will need the Directx v9.0 or higher and a directx 8.1 compatible sound card

One thing that I think might be required for Oblivion is the Net Framework 1.1 upgrade.

I recommend that you uninstall Oblivion - use the uninstall on the disk as it will not work right from the hard drive. Then erase the folder where it installed - if you used the default it will be C:\Program Files\Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion - Delete the Bethesda Softworks folder and all of its contents. Then, there is another folder, located in C:\Documents and Settings ... You may have to drill down to find it named My Games\Oblivion Delete the Oblivion folder only.

Then reboot to clear some settings. There are also some settings that The installer puts into the Windows registry that probably need to be taken out for a total uninstall. As I don't recomend editing the registry, You will need a registry cleaning program to get rid of them (and any other junk that has accumulated there) I recommend ccleaner , its free and available here: Majorgeeks.com.

Be sure to reboot both before and after cleaning.

Now that oblivion is completely removed, Reinstall. But DO NOT put it in the default location.

Quoted from the Oblivion Mods FAQ WIKI

Using VISTA only: If you have downloaded and installed, and the mod is appearing in your Data Files List, but not in your game. Then you should reinstall Oblivion into a different directory instead of the default.

Installing mods on a Windows Vista system is bit trickier than it is on Windows XP due to Vista's increased security.

For best results, it is recommended to install Oblivion to a location other than the default C:\Program Files\ folder. Another location such as C:\Oblivion\ or D:\games\Oblivion\ will work better. This will avoid the file permission problems many users have experienced due to the increased security restrictions Vista places on the Program Files folder.

Wiki entry on installing Oblivion in Vista: http://cs.elderscrolls.com/constwiki/index.php/Windows_Vista

If you can't, or just don't want to reinstall Oblivion, try this.

Vista users may have to disable a security function known as UAC. If you have downloaded and installed, and the mod is appearing in your Data Files List, but not in your game check to see if UAC is turned on. If so. Look here for instructions on how to turn it off. http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vis...-windows-vista/

Hopefully this will work. If not, maybe there is someone out there with the same laptop with more information.

Unfortunately, your moble intel ® 965 express chipset is not supported by Oblivion. I found several websites where people were having the same problem. Most were old though.

Try upgrading your video drivers to the latest version If the video drivers have never been updated this might help. But even if it does run, don't expect it to run good.

Dell has a driver update section on their support site. If they don't have it, try the intel driver update site.
