dontpanic
I am trying to take the Laser Rifle and add a new texture to a modified Laser rifle without touching the default laser rifles skin. If anyone can walk me through this I would appreciate it greatly.
SpeedyB64
Adding a weapon now is a long and complex process, there are lots of tutorials on this site for that. I suggest that you wait for the G.E.C.K. once it's out all this kind of stuff will be a million times easier.
dontpanic
Can someone point me to where those tutorials are. Knowing Bethesda it will still be a long time till the G.E.C.K.'s release.
SpeedyB64
I can't point you to the tutorials because I am running this site through a proxy right now (at school). You could use this site's search function. Search for "MODDING: Adding a NEW weapon".
dontpanic
OK thank you. I guess patience will do me better than rushing hit and miss on modding.
xxxHACKERxxx
Have you tried the Plugin Editor in the Fallout Mod Manager (FOMM)? it's not like the GECK but is always easy to create new weapon and object.I suggest you to download a simple weapon mod and open the plugin with the editor: if you are smart enogh in 5 minutes you can create your mod.Of course with the GECK you will need only 1 minute, but you have to wait another week... :)
dontpanic
I haven't really played with the plugin editor and am not sure how to replace textures with that.
SpeedyB64
A lot of people seem to think the plugin file has something to do with the texturing. The plugin only effects the texture for the weapons and only to switsh between 1st person and low-rez textures. The textures are controlled by the nif file and they can be changes with nifskope. I think I will make a fallout plugin system visual map or something. (sometimes a visual representation of this kind of stuff helps). Anyway in order to retexture something even with the G.E.C.K. the nif will still need to be edited.

It was not letting me see the .nif files I edited and saved and it would not work in game either.
SpeedyB64
Nifskope has trouble with fallout nifs ATM. A fallout nif can only be opened if the game has never used it. I can only open a nif that I unpacked from the bsa files. Once a nif is opened in nifskope and saved for fallout it is unopenable. So the nif you are opening needs to be fresh from the bsa in order to open. Also make sure you have the latest nifskope.
