CrazyAce
Sorry all I couldn't find a better place to post this on these forums and thought this is going to be a problem for other people also. And a search for Vista, dds… didn’t come back with this sort of topic. Who here is a 3ds max 8 user? I noticed a few weeks ago that max 8 cannot read dds files from Nvida's 3ds max plugin. When I open a dds file in the material manager I get this error message: Image I/O Error.Error creating Direct3D Device I did a search on Google and found on the Nvidia web site forums that say they have the solution; however I have no idea how to install this manual version. I sent a PM to the person and asked how to get it to install, so I’m still waiting to hear back, it’s been a week so far. In the mean time I just wanted to share this problem and see if anyone has been through this... damn Autodesk...
SpeedyB64
You could get GIMP it's free and the dds exporter is fool proof. I make textures in photoshop then open them in GIMP and export them. The GIMP dds exporter is WAY simpler than the Nvidia one. All you have to do is save as .dds and click OK in the box that appears (it sometimes gives an error message but it doesn't matter) it has never failed me. CrazyAce
Na man, this is for 3ds Max 8. I got the whole Photoshop thing covered, thank you though. Everyone I figured it out (took a while), for people not able to view dds images in 3ds max 8 on Vista, follow these steps. 1) Download and install the Nvidias dds plug-in + the source code. 2) Download ETA 3ds max 8 dds plugin fix, extract the archive and place the DDSImpSrc20080321 folder to the source code destination from step one. 3) Place the dds.bmi file to your 3ds max plug-in folder and walah, you got dds textures in max 8 while using Vista. SpeedyB64
I guess I will stick with XP and max 7 :)
CrazyAce
lol na just stick with XP, any max works fine on it. I also have learned that max 9 on vista has the same issue, Autodesk clams to have a fix, but I haven't tested it out yet.
