Please help me, I can't start new characters or edit my old ones, even with mod workarounds like the ring of change and all that. I have 2 GeForce GT 545's, each with 1 GB of Vram. That's 2 GB of Vram when they're working together. Here are my specs:

I run my graphics settings on High, but I really don't believe Vram is the problem.

Please, please, someone help me. I'm at my wits' end, almost in tears of self-pitying despair.

I checked my vram usage during the crash and that really is the problem after all. Any ideas?

The problem could be anything (not necessary your GPU), and is more likely related to the fact that you are using several hair packs. I have a 512mb GPU and run Skyhair, no issue with going into showracemenu, while some people with 2GB GPU report persistent CTDs when modifying their characters. A couple of things you can do:

1) if you really think it's a vram issue (and I am not saying it isn't, but it isn't 'necessarily' that), use Texture Optimizer to reduce the texture size of the hairs.

2) if that still doesn't work, start removing hair packs from your load order and keep only the ones you need. It's the only thing you can do.

No, it's not. Any resources (textures and meshes primarily) that get loaded to one card's vRAM bank have to get loaded to the other card as well. These resources are what eat most of your vRAM. A 1920x1080 frame with 8x MSAA is like 35MB, Direct3D games will only store two frames at a time (unless your using D3DOveride to force Triple Buffering but that's beside the point). Running SLI means each card basically only draws half of each frame so you're really only getting between 35 to 100MB of extra vRAM from running SLI depending on resolution and AA options.

It could be your system is taking to long to find, store, decompress, and pass the resources for the hair mods on to your video card. You could try defragmenting your drive if you're using an HDD. You could try decompressing the resources and just having them be loose files (assuming they're currently in .bsa's). If you're running any mods that add a lot of Tint Masks (skin tones, lipstick and makeup colors, etc.) you could try getting rid of them or installing a version with fewer options, they take way, way longer to process than meshes and textures.

I play at fullscreen. Would it help to lower the screen resolution before using showracemenu or making a new char?

I do use Optimizer textures. I have resized my patterns to 4x4 and scaled down my textures to 1024. This sometimes works, but not always.

Also, I found out something very strange. If I wear a hat going into Showracemenu, I can sometimes prevent a crash...

I have a fantastic idea... Somebody should make a mod or a batch file that automatically turns all your gfx settings to the lowest possible when using showracemenu, Then once you're done it automatically turns it back...

I want to know WTF is eating up all my vram. I run Optimizer textures every time I install a new mod, and therefore don't have any textures over 1k. Is it some sort of hardware incompatibility? I can't recall it ever being this bad before. Did patch 1.8 break something?

EDIT: Ah. it's the hair mods. I know Wyre Bash had a thing where you could fix hairstyles so they wouldn't do that for Oblivion. Does it have it for Styrim?
