Skyrim SE freezes for 1-2 seconds every minute or so :(

Hello Friends,
I have been playing Skyrim SE for half a month of so now, my character is at level 15.

Installed/downloaded from Steam, using MO2 for mod management and installlation which uses LOOT.

I have about 150 or so mods installed :

The game ran fine till a few days ago when i finally hit the freeze issue.

I did a lot of research :

 

1) Most of it pointed me towards checking my save file size, which to my dismay turned out to be just a bit under 12 MB. Still i went ahead and ran the save file cleaner tool "ReSaver" and cleared all the "unattached instances". And deleted unused saves from my previous playthroughs.

 

-- Did not fix the issue.

 

2) Waited 31 ingame days in an interior cell(Breezehome) to reset extrerior cells.

 

-- Did not fix the issue

 

3) Installed BethINI tweaker and applied all the Recommended Tweaks.

 

-- Did not fix the issue

 

3) Ran the Script Latency Checker Tool.

 

-- Averaged latency around 90, but noticed that during the freeze the latency could shoot upto 150, but shoorting upto 150 wasn't limited to the freezing, it would also happen as i enter a new area or if due to the graphical mods my FPS would take a hit a few times at certain places. So in short it was inconcclusive.

 

4) Added SKSE INI with "ClearInvalidRegistrations"

 

-- Now this was odd, i could not get it to work, i installed it using MO2, but when i try to run the same command in game it still gives me the error saying command not found, so many i am not installing it right, your help would be needed.

 

 

Additional points i wanted to make :
I am running the game in Borderless mode

The freeze happens every 1 minute
The freeze can happen indoors as well as outdoors, it can even happen in menu

Similar freeze is also observed when i quicksave the game

A few preliminary things I do for troubleshooting include:

 

Running Skyrim through steam with no mods. To rule out if it's a mod issue or else.

disabling mods one by one to check which one if any mods are causing the problem

(most of the other things I do, seems you have already done them: LOOT, INI Tweaking, etc)

 

After those fail to fix the problem I typically check for incompatibilities with mods. Check to see all my mods are up to date (Including SKSE, and the actual skyrim game) This usually takes a very long time. Especially since your problem seems to not be tied to just one aspect of the game, you say it freezes just anywhere, even in menus.

 

I would also check that Vsync is enabled in nvidia control panel.

Also cap FPS at 60, either through ENB or other means. Skyrim does not play well with higher framerates.

Possibly updating graphics driver, prerequisites(Visual C++, etc) Verify integrity of game files through steam

Thanks for the suggestion. Some folks had suggested Realistic Water 2 or Sounds of Skyrim might be the cause as it was in their case as well.

So i tried removing them, but to no avail.

 

Then i tried enabling vsync and forcing 60 FPS, again to no avail.

 

Lastly, i tried to launch the game without SKSE from Steam and tried loading the most recent save, well as expected it gave me a long list of warning about the missing esps and when it finally loaded it crashed in 2 seconds.

 

Then i loaded the oldest save i had just after i started playing and while i still got that long list of warnings the game loaded up fine, played for about 5 minutes and by played i mmeant running around the wilderness and there was no freezing !!

 

Now this could mean 2 things my save file is beyond saving its already done for.

 

OR

 

There could be a mod causing it, but still not sure if removing the mod will solve the issue since all the data is already written into the save file.

 

Any suggestions on how to go about diagnosing the mod list, its quite a hefty list, would be a real shame if i had to restart my game(loosing all my progress) :(

make sure your GPU isn't overheating (I notice you have a 2080 which has a very good thermal output, but still never know I guess)

I've heard reverting to a save just before when the freezes started, fixes it for some people. I'm guessing for this fix to work, something in that amount of time has corrupted the save (usually too many scripts)

and if it is a problem with the actual save file, it's likely it's due to too many scripted mods added. which means you would have to remove a few of the big ones (big quest mods, mods that add lots of NPCs, animation mods) and THEN revert to a save from before the freezing.

 

 

But as for diagnosing which mod/mods are causing it (it will take a while) but I usually choose a category of mod (the types of mods that are likely the problem, I would start with heavily scripted mods in your case) and I will deactivate just one, see if that fixes it, if not deactivate another.. I know it sounds annoying, but if it is a particular mod, which I think is very likely. This will find which one it is. If/when you find the problem mod through painstakingly deactivating/reactivating mods for 10hrs(maybe an exaggeration haha). You'll need to check you have the latest version of that mod, check the bugs section on the nexus page, and check incompatibilities and if there is one get a patch.

 

Again I hope you find a fix. A couple years ago I had this same problem, it was due to my GPU overheating and it's a pain, virtually impossible to play the game. I feel your pain

Check what's going on outside the game. You might have some window process like antivirus that's periodically interferring.

I see you are using MO2,i'm guessing with WryeBash. Bottom of your loadorder (LOOT) is bashedpatch0.esp ?

In addition to the above, you could have a network problem. A heavily-modded game can hog a lot of bandwidth. Try turning off any program that is running in the background. Also, it may help to reduce screen resolution.
