Halsfield
apples and oranges not being comparable is a silly line of thought. they're both fruit, i like both, they both share a lot of similarities and each are distinctly different. if you cannot compare apples and oranges you cannot compare anything. fallout 3 and oblivion share many of the same interface/play style aspects so i dont think its out of left field to say "i wish they had done some things in fallout 3 like they did in oblivion" or "i wish oblivion had some of the fun aspects of fallout 3". Wishing is what motivates modders, and i dont think anyone should be told not to do that. The only thing that should not be done is to say that fallout 3 is bad because it is not more oblivion like, or the opposite. Saying you would like to see aspects of older games in newer games is how games progress. The good stuff is kept and the bad stuff is taken out in newer and newer games, otherwise we would still be playing 8bit platformers. I liked the leveling system in oblivion because it let you "train" yourself by repeatedly doing actions you got better at that skill. The problem with oblivion's system is that you level up by training only 10 skills which causes you to level quickly if you are not careful and be stuck with leveled trade skills and speech skills when you need better combat skills to survive higher and higher levels. In fallout 3 the system is nice because you have complete control over what you want to level and what you need to level at every skill up so you can guarantee you get the skills you need. it also takes less time to kill a bunch of npcs than it does to level a speech skill or something in oblivion . Neither system is better, but if the negative aspects of oblivions level up system were combined with the static level up of fallout 3 to allow you to correct poor training choices you would have a pretty neat system. of course purists dont want anything changed from the original fallout games which is both good and bad. Wanting to keep a good thing going is an intelligent choice, but modifying a good thing to be even better is even smarter and makes a great game into an even better one. Its also sad to see many people saying fallout 3 is not as good because it isnt a fps version of fallout 1 + 2 which is not what this game was meant to be, so coming into it thinking thats what you were getting is obviously going to lead to disappointment. So basically, all discussion , as long as it is intelligent and not just internet slang or whining slapped into a paragraph, should be encouraged. If we didnt hope for a better game none of these mods would exist and that would be a very sad day. Saying that there are things that could be improved does not mean that we think a game is bad. mezlo
My vote has to got to Oblivion for several reasons: 1) Larger world to explore2) More quests, more NPCs, more locations, more just about everything3) Horses. I rarely fast travel and walking in Fallout 3 is just plain slow4) Better scenery. While post-apocalyptic is cool, it's really hard to beat the stunning scenery of Oblivion That being said, Oblivion's biggest annoyance was the global crime system, which I'm glad doesn't exist in Fallout 3. Ject67
Landmass to discover: Oblivion definitely feels bigger since you cant see the imperial city from the opposite side of the map, where-as tenpenny tower / washington dc is visible (as long as you stand on high ground of course) ummm right. Have you even tried viewing the imperial city from a distance? washington DC is much bigger than the imperial city so it should be easier to see. But anyway, here's some pics of me looking at the imperial city from a distance http://i36.tinypic.com/29qmfcp.jpg http://i34.tinypic.com/f9i3om.jpg got you jarred now aye? ;D
Halsfield
That being said, Oblivion's biggest annoyance was the global crime system, which I'm glad doesn't exist in Fallout 3. Mez honestly i find fallout 3's crime system to be more annoying. you get "karma" hits for stealing while hidden and out of sight. you get attacked until you are dead if you pickpocket and fail or if you steal something in sight whereas oblivion you just pay a fine and get your stuff taken (although its super easy to get it back by lockpicking). again, i dont encourage anyone to say oblivion or fallout 3 is better, they're different and each has their pros and cons. talking about eaches pros and cons is fine, but i dont think either one can definitively be claimed as entirely better or worse. Here's my comparison - Oblivion - medieval agesFallout 3 - post apocalyptic with a modern future twist Enough said. yes that is true, but talking about things we liked from oblivion and would like to see in fallout 3 is completely valid line of discussion. a large number of the mods out there are based on similar ones from oblivion. on the flip side of that it is just as important to talk about what both games lack that needs improving either in a mod or a future expansion/sequel so we get even better games . Landmass to discover: Oblivion definitely feels bigger since you cant see the imperial city from the opposite side of the map, where-as tenpenny tower / washington dc is visible (as long as you stand on high ground of course) ummm right. But anyway, here's some pics of me looking at the imperial city from a distance got you jarred now aye? ;D you cannot view either the imperial city or the Washington monuments(yes there are more than one monument in washington, not just the spire) from everywhere in either game so its a silly thing to talk about. i do believe oblivion's world is larger, but i don't feel like fallout 3 is lacking map space or interesting places to visit. simply being larger than another game does not make a game good or bad. evidence of this can be seen in vanguard:saga of heroes which had a truly enormous world but had little interesting content to keep someone playing very long. lukestonehm
i like both games very much but fallout 3 would benefit from a tactical mod (when B releases the SDK):whoops: I must say that i would still go with fallout....its sooo much more pretty....even though it shouldn't be
imready86k
i like this discussion of the pro's to both games,CRIME SYSTEM:how about someone create a mod for fallout that ignores karma when you steal and if someone catches you, you get the option to REFUSE letting them take it back instead of them saying "theif theif!" and at the top left corner of your screen you see ---hammer removedtin cup removedlady's underpants removedtampon removed---also in some cities if you commit a crime you can go to jail (not all, paradise falls would have a jail but megaton would stay as "shoot on site", ten penny tower would put you in crime gold debt and give you a week to pay up or else automatically a week later when you sleep you wake up thrown into a pit with deathclaw)
Werewolf334
Oblivion packs a big hit in a large world, Fallout 3 offers a big hit in a small world. Although fallout 3 has a bit of a smaller world, it has more interior places, and not to forget the underground areas. The game is larger than what is depicted from just a far view of the city. Same goes for oblivion but the point is the interior of fallout 3 I fell is far more adapted. Also, when playing the game in HD with HD sound and 3d sound effects Fallout 3 offers AWESOME sound detail, I rate the Sound of Fallout 3 above Oblivion just because of the effects. I can add a video to show you what it sounds like on my system, but granted things always are never as good as when they are actually played. Another thing I noted is the dynamics of dialogue and speech interactions with everyone. Instead of going around asking for rumors the conversations are much more involved in Fallout 3. I don't feel silly when I actually "talk" to NPCs. Sure the voice overs could've been better, but I don't like people yelling at me through the game you know, I don't care if it is a person in charge or giving you orders, if it yells at me I take that as a hostile act, AND I KILL IT. (relating to fallout 2) The dynamics of Fallout 3 is not all the great, the crippled system could have been much better, and where are the diseases and radiation effects? I only noted one radiation effect and that is AFTER doing Moira's quests (if you get over 600 rads anyways.) However, I was not able to play both Oblivion or Fallout 3 without mods, so BOTH games could have been much better than what bethesda first provides. It is indeed as if they are just shoving out game as fast as possible. With mods I believe oblivion currently beats Fallout 3, but now that GECK has been released, I suspect that fallout 3 will soon be in the lead in my own personal opinions. I also found that characters in Fallout 3 have better AI than in Oblivion, NPCs walk around more and interact more. One thing that annoys me the most in fallout 3 is the clipping. (ever go up and try to hit a rock with a melee weapon, sometime it goes through) Another very annoying thing is that everytime I try to shoot something or knock something around (lab equipment or bottles or etc) it doesn't get effected! (Try shooting the hula doll in Tenpenny Tower on the front desk.) As for which game is larger? Fallout 3 I think is much larger... just do to the fact it has more cells. (i think) EDIT: it is also less cartoony. I can't play WoW to save my life cause it looks like Im watching a very bad low quality anime. Oblivion was cartoony a little bit, but not as much, and it was tolerable. Fallout 3 has less of that cartoony look (if you know what I mean)

I found that after level 6 I was starting to feel the game was getting boring, then I put the difficulty setting to very hard and now venturing out for 1/4 to 1/2 a day can be more fun than a quest. I prefere the survival adventure than trying to find civilians captured at german police HQ.
