Do you mean files from archives you have downloaded, texture and music files from the original game, or files extracted using FOMM? :s

Thank you I apologize for not being clearer. I want to toy with the files before G.E.C.K is released so I have Ideas what I want to do.

Ah right O'.

Personally I use FOMM as described by the above poster - using it is a bit tricky at first, though pretty easy once you get the hang of it. to export files from the .esps (where the original game data is stored) you'll need to install and run FOMM and pick the option called "BSA unpacker" and press the "open" button at the lower left. Pick whatever .esp you need to open (Fallout 3 textures contains textures, meshes contains meshes etc.) and find the files you wish to edit, select it and export it to a location on your harddrive. Most of the files are named according to the items ingame with few exceptions, but finding the correct ones is a little difficult as you can't search for the files. A neat trick is pressing the "sort" button on the lower right with "folder names" selected as the sorting criteria - it'll sort the various entries according to what folder they are in, so for instance if you are looking for an armour texture to change, it'll be under "textures/armour/something_something.dds" or similar entry.

Happy hunting! :D

You might want to poke around the forums a bit as well and take a look at some of the tutorials - a good idea is to start out making something basic like a retexture of an existing item and then making it into a separate one using the plugin editor. Armour is pretty easy to do once you get the hang of it. :)
