faerfern34
This is just some helpful information I discovered while trying to overcome the limitations of making custom homes functional for both the spouse and adopted children in Skyrim. The idea occurred to me that since adopted children are tied to vanilla and hearthfire homes via scripts and markers that an easy workaround should be changing the doors that lead to those interior cells. I used the following tutorial on YouTube to make new doors: In the ck I chose a player home that I wanted to modify, in my case Hjerim. I simply loaded it up in the render window and deleted the door leading to the outside. For some reason I had to save my plugin at that time and reload the CK for the changes to show up. Once everything was reloaded I added a new door in its place and used the above mentioned video to create an external door in the area I had chosen for my new player home. Once everything was properly linked I loaded the game and tested everything out. I used the console to quickly purchase Hjerim and then adopted Sofie the child selling flowers in Windhelm. There seemed to be a bug in the game at that point as she did not follow me to the new player home but once I fast traveled there and waited for 24 hours she arrived. All of the dialogue works fine, and when told to "go outside and play". She exited the cell and appeared on the exterior of the new player home. When she was told "Its time to go inside" she returned to the door on the custom player home and entered the cell. I have not went as far as to try to edit her scripts, but I think some sandbox reference additions will have to be made else when she is told to play outside she heads off toward Windhelm when reaching the exterior of the custom player home because that is the place she is normally scripted to go when being "outside of Hjerim". Using this method any of the vanilla or hearthfire homes should be customizable to work around the current limitations inherent in the hearthfire dlc. You should be able to completely redesign the interior of which ever vanilla home you desire to make it your custom home. I would recommend though to be careful when changing the cell not to delete any of the items in the adopted children's bedroom nor any markers related to the child or adoption. Obviously this is not a perfect solution to the issue of making custom player homes fully compatible with Hearthfire, but as mentioned above it is a workaround for those of you who are tired of waiting for someone to offer a mod that does. In order to use this method with custom player homes designed by others and packaged in mods, you would have to copy the entire interior cell of their home and paste it into the interior cell for the vanilla player home ie Hjerim, Breezehome etc and modify the doors accordingly so that the doors worked correctly. The main concern with using the interior of a custom player home from a mod would be making sure to move all of the furniture and markers used by Hearthfire into the new location. Although it might sound easier just to try to add these manually into a cell instead of copying and pasting a separate interior into a preexisting one, the scripts for adopting children are tied into vanilla and hearthfire locations. I hope this information proves helpful, as I said earlier it's certainly not a perfect solution to the problem just a short term workaround. Morticyah
Interresting. Altough i'm just a beginner, i will try this out when i have the time.I don't think there is much known about the adoption system, it stays one of the dark secrets of Skyrim. I had to build me a home at Lakevieuw to adopt some kids, the Thane's homes did not work for me.But i was eager to get Sofie out of that cold town :PI even had to marry to have someone to watch over them when i'm out adventuring. Would be nice if i could build me a practical home, suited for my needs :)

I am in the process now of trying to edit the scripts and dialogue in order to make a real working mod for this issue. I'll update this topic as soon as some real progress is made. SSMonseSR
If you want the child and can not adopt her or him, because you are at your limit. I figured out this.......... make a bat file with thisremovefromallfactionssetrelationshiprank player 4addtofaction 0005a1a4 4addtofaction 0005c84d 4setplayerteammate 1 then click on the npc in the console and run the bat file. They then should have the option to follow you.I then have the MOD "My Home is Your Home" installed.I take them to where I want them to live and tell them this is their home.To get them to go to bed.... I use the console and click on a bed and (setownership npc base ID) and then they will use the bed. They will stay inside only, I have not gotten as far as sandboxing them to go outside and play. The Creation Kit is like a nightmare to me.
