Fallout Freezes

Anyone else having this problem?

I'll be either running in third person in the wasteland or in one of my pipboy menus screens and the game just freezes. The longer i play the game the more frequent the freezes seem to be. I'm on my first character and am at level 15 i think. I do have various texture mods running as well as new music mp3's and a few other mods that i wouldn't think would be such a big deal. Does anyone have any ideas as to what could be causing these kinds of freezes?

No freezing here. System specs if you want are listed in link below in sig.

I have a few ideas though of course without enough data points such as system specs and all I'm shootin in the dark.

Be sure no background process is kicking in like some damn scheduler doing lord knows what. A virus scan maybe or Windows Indexing service (which shoule be disabled on any game box). Stuff like that.

Possible memory leak aggravation due to the mods your using (texture mods).

I know on my system my games performance has dropped and I do have more crashes than the game did at first and I KNOW it is due to a couple of high rez texture packs I installed. I put up with it as my hardware has the umph and the crashing is not that often, here. The issue here never causes pausing or 'freezes' just game crash however if the memory leak is bad nuff it can start to 'chug' on me. LOL Love those tech terms.

I would put on top of the list Windows or some other application in the background doing something that is causing this issue and not the game itself. Course the other possibilty it is some problem with vid drivers but as your post lacks details we can't really go there.

Hey Uzibeatle, thanks for the great info. Sorry about the sparseness of my post. I thought there might be some very general info out there about Fallout and what sorts of things were known to cause problems. Prior to Fallout, my primary experience with using mods was with Oblivion in which i had about 50 different texture mods and had very little problems with crashes.

I'm very interested in what you referred to as "memory leak aggravation" due to texture replacing mods. I'd love to hear more about that. I did a search on goggle but didn't find much helpful info about it. Could you please elaborate? I'd really appreciate it.

Should i get rid of my texture replacing mods for Fallout? I'm using about a dozen right now. Thanks.

Okay, so i removed all weapon, armor & creature texture mods, but now i'm having this really weird problem where my character suddenly breaks into "auto-run" mode and i can't get out of it. I can't bring up my pipboy or even escape from the game. I have to control-alt-delete in order to get out. It's super irritating. I changed my keystroke settings so that that command is nowhere near the buttons I use and yet my character will, after playing 10 minutes or so, break into this bizarre, auto-run freeze-crash. Ugh. Arg. I love this game, but having problems like this makes me wonder if i'd be better off with a stupid console game instead of a pc version. :(

Well on the memory leak there is one in the game, least on my system. It takes many hours to manifest though and never really did occur much on my default game install. Once I started loading it down with big fat scenery texture mods things got noticably worse here. I attribute that to a memory leak someplace but i cant' say if it is the games fault or my vid drivers. It is a complex issue. I dont' worry about it as it takes a fair amount of time to become an issue and a quick game restart

fixes this here.

For your last post .. hmm.. That sounds like maybe a external device maybe is activating the keystroke that enables autorun

in the game. Check the in game keyboard mappings and maybe change it.

If you have a gamepad installed maybe disconnect it.

I've had PC's for years and many keyboards...it is not unheard of for a key on a keyboard to get noisy and stick down ....just an idea. You might check the key that activates autorun....

As for that console idea... erm.. I'd rethink that. Course I never had one since the early 80's , Atari 5200 or somethng I think. Not looked back since being a PC gamer from the start.

From my understanding, your "autorun" problem doesn't have anything to do with autorun at all. When the game freezes on you it holds down whatever action your currently doing. For example if you were holding down the fire button and shooting a minigun or some automatic weapon just as the game freezes, you would constantly shoot and reload until judgment day. From another perspective, the game doesn't freeze at all, your input does, I froze in the middle of fights and just sat at watched as raiders bruised me to death with their little chinese pistols. I've been having this problem for quite a while now and every time i google looking for answers, every solution i find points to an audio codec problem. Tried all their solutions with no success. On one of my older computers it would play perfectly, no freezes no crashing, but I had to keep the graphics cranked all the way down just to keep an acceptable framerate. Had Win XP on the old computer, Vista 64bit on this new one....

This only happened to me when I installed a mod which apparently caused the freezes.

I un-installed it and no more freezes. :)

I'm not going to name the mod as I'm not 110% certain it wasn't just conflicting with another so it really isn't fair to do so but the whole point of this drivel is..... you may want to go through your mods and disable / re-nable until you find the issue.

Good luck.
