My Mounted Combat Seems Broken.

I first played Skyrim on the XBOX version where the mounted combat seems to work just fine. After playing the game on my new PC for the first time, I found, much to my dismay, that the mounted combat seems to be broken. The only way my swings will do damage is if the pursuer is directly on the front right or front left of my horse. If they are right beside me, they simply get swept aside like I'm swinging a broom instead of a claymore. I recall one time when I was desperately swinging my greatsword at two wolves chomping away at my horse's ankles. Instead of damaging them, my sword miraculously scoops the two dogs right off the ground, sending them up into the air and crashing back down, killing them of drop damage. I found this as just troubling as it was funny. I'm unsure of what caused this, but It should be worth mentioning that I went a little crazy with the mods.
