First Time Modder

Recommended Posts

Downloaded and installed the 25 essential skyrim mods first thing.

I also downloaded a file that was supposed to launch the game in windowed mode at full screen resolution.

I'm not sure what happened, but the gamed crashed right before the loading screen every time.

I know I threw a TON of variables at the system at once.

So I'm not asking for a fix, just maybe a general thought process on how I should proceed to get the most out of my modding experience with as few of these holdups as possible.

Thanks in advance!

Wrye bash is probably worth learning about, especially if you're going to use a lot of mods. It can be a bit complicated at first, but once you know what you're doing it's an invaluable tool.

As for your problem, it sounds like one of your esp files are missing an esm they rely on.

First and foremost: a modder is a person who creates mods. A mod user is one who uses mods.

Always install mods one at a time, allowing for plenty of testing each mod out before installing another mod (for this purpose I always make one 'test' character who's entire save profile is only dedicated to testing out new mods before I introduce them to my regular characters) when you install more than one mod at a time you are asking for trouble and the modding gods will smite you. I'm only half kidding, I've seen it happen time and again to experienced mod users and newbies alike, just because they installed a bunch of mods all at once (even if it's a bunch of mods they know work together, something will go wrong, the gods - they be capricious).

Basic method of identifying a bugged mod or mod conflict after you've ignored the previous point: Uncheck all mods. Re-inable 1 mod. Go into game and test thoroughly to make sure this one mod has no problems. Exit game. Re-inable 1 more mod. Go into game and test thoroughly to make sure these two mods play nice nicely together. Repeat for the entire mod list.

The above step is tedious and time consuming and sometimes still doesn't work, which makes it even more important to reiterate: Always install mods one at a time.

Welcome to the fun, wacky and sometimes frustrating world of modded games. Good luck
