Savegame Issues

Right, so I like to save regularly, and if I'm honest, a little obsessively. Somehow the number on my save file has passed 1000 (that is, number of times saved, not number of save FILES :P ).

Recently I've had a lot of crashes. Before I'd get a crash very rarely, but now they're quite frequent, so frequent that every time I try to conjure my sword the next thing I see is the desktop. No warnings or errors, just gone. Even after completely reinstalling and removing most mods it seems apparent that the problem is elsewhere.

Hence I mentioned the massive counter on the save game. Is this to do with save game "bloating" I've heard of? I've never looked into it before and I'm not really sure how it works.

Save bloating isn't the number of saves, but rather the size of individual saves. A new game's save should be around 5MB in size, while a more advanced game is around 17MB. Bloating is when something goes pear-shaped in the game (usually a script that keeps running and never turns off) and gets saved with your savegame. Check your savegame directionry (/My Documents/My Games/Skyrim/Saves) and see if your save files are way larger than 17MB.

I don't think there's any way to save a save file that's been hit by the bloat.

The largest I have is around 9MB, those are quick and auto saves. The main save file is less at about 8MB, so it seems I was a little quick to assume.

The main cause of the most recent crashes was conjuring a bound sword, I've since noticed it only crashes when conjuring this weapon right-handed. Left-hand bound swords are fine.
