RestitutorOrbix
I have only recently started playing a Mage character in Oblivion, after playing warriors of various kinds. What I would like to know is whether casting spells from staves or scrolls grants experience in the corresponding school of magic or whether only casting them by hand does so. I would like my character to progress in certain schools of magic but do not know whether casting spells from staves or scrolls will do so or whether they are instead a crutch that will do nothing to progress my character's abilities. Thanks in advance for any advice on this matter!
Kepihan
Its only casting them by hand I'm afraid. Best way to train magic is to go the Arcane University, then make a spell on the altar which uses as little magicka as possible. Like destruction, I use Corrode Armour but on the lowest settings. Normally if you can get them to cost 1-3 magicka, you can continue casting indefinatley. As your magicka restores itself faster than you use it up. Make sure the target is 'self' though so you can cast without having to find new targets. Also if you hold the block button down, and the cast button at the same time, casting is much faster than normal so you get much more exp.

Have people commented on the disincentive this creates to use staves or scrolls if you are a mage character, I wonder?
Kepihan
The good thing about scrolls and staves is you can use the effect regardless of your level in that skill. So in the short term it allows you to use higher levelled spells/effects at any level.
fabulance
In oblivion I was always a mageif you want to improve some school magics I advice you to use your own spellsbecause I think that using scrolls you dont improve willpower and intelligence that are the things in lower levels that you have to improve, when you have a good amount of magic and wildpower, you may improve more specific magic schools, about the staffs, my bes advise is that in the lower levels, you have to use a powerfull staff of destruction like the one that sells rindir in the IC I think that is ..Apoteosis.. I dont remember wellthen you can also use the blade , I always use the blade because the staffs are to spensive to rechargeLook for good scrolls in the magesguild halls in the cities SoFAr sO GoOdFabuLanCe..
