Playthrough advice

I never played Morrowind more than a couple of hours at the time. I started on the elder scrolls with Oblivion, and just could not stand the graphics & controls. i love the Lore and exploration of the Elder Scrolls. Since Everyone always talks about Morrowind as best "Scrolls" So i wanted to give it another try.

I just need advice, what mods should i start out with? something that improves the graphics, and something for the gameplay.

Or if i dared? should i try the Oblivion mod -the one that may not be named?

thanks in advance

I'm sure the above page (oops didn't look) is filled with goodies but to be honest the best thing you can do in my opinion is play it through the first time without any additions.

Some visual additions are really essential now becuase of the age of the game. Better Bodies/ Clothes/ Heads etc are a must and perhaps one of the many texture mods that overhaul the general graphics.

As for mods that actually add quests and land etc I would personally wait until you have at least played through the main quests once.

There are some great ones out there; May I recommend "The Underground" for a start.

I agree with RubberMan01, the only mod (or group) I would recommend for a first time player is the Morrowind Overhaul. It makes the game look so much better and, as far as I can tell, doesn't have an affect on gameplay. I might not have used it long enough to tell though.

i think we can all agree, that it's best to stick to a mostly vanilla game when starting out, though there are a few mods that simply make the game better:

Toggle Sneak by Yacoby, especially important if you're playing any kind of stealth type character, changes the sneak key to a toggle so you don't wear your pinky out holding down the cntrl key.

requires Morrowind Graphics Extender: http://sourceforge.net/projects/morrgraphext/?source=dlp

any kind of Magicka regeneration mod if you're a spellcaster.

Ownership Indicator by Yacoby will help prevent you from accidentally stealing anything with the guards watching.

Time Display by Yacoby adds the current ingame time at the top of the screen, great for planning forays into the wilderness, as traveling during the day is easier and safer than starting out in the evening.

Animal Realism by Sal Maker makes traveling less tedious, as most mundane animals such as guars, cliff racers, and kwama foragers will no longer attack you on sight, though some animals that look dangerous are more dangerous than before.

if you're a ranged character check out the "Area Affect Arrows" Official DLC plugin, it is now free to use and makes your ranged weapons much more lethal, though keep in mind that innocent bystanders can by injured in the AoE, thus bringing a bounty.

The MGSO (Morrowind Graphics & Sound Overhaul) is pretty great if you can't really stand the lower graphics; it improves them while keeping the vanilla feel.

However, you definitely need the Code Patch (which is included in the overhaul) for bugfixes, and some nice features you may want to enable (like the toggle sneak, etc).

I use a couple other mods (such as the Galsiah's Character mod, which adjusts level system, imo, to a much better and more TES like feel). You may want to wait to add these until you have a grasp of the vanilla systems and game first, so you know what is actually changed. But for the most part, MW is pretty great on its own. Yes, the magicka takes getting used to (use a slow magicka regen mod if you really need to, so that you can restore magicka WITHOUT having to rest, just wait). And the new spell distribution is also a bit different, esp. coming from Skyrim (not sure how different it is from Oblivion).

I recommend a custom class, and including alteration and mysticism in your major/minor skills for their utility, esp. for a new player. I also recommend picking a melee weapon as a major skill, so you can improve your hit chance early on (long blades are a safe pick). Check out the Unofficial Elder Scrolls pages for hints for a new player, and look at the way the leveling system and skills work (which is very different from later games). And most of all, stick with it for at least 10+ hours, because then you should start to get into it and enjoy the game :D Also, remember to use your journal often if you get lost regarding quests. And pay for training, esp. low level skills so that you can get those nice stat multipliers when you level up.

And if you are using the GOTY edition, do not go into Tribunal early on. You will be destroyed.... it's meant for post main quest characters. Solstheim is also a bit hard for new characters, although after level 10 (maybe earlier if you know what you're doing) you should be ok.
