That's why I only use 7z to open all my archived folders. (7z, Rar, and Zip)

Winrar by default tries to ensure/insist it creates a subfolder, to save you from "accidentally" merging your folders.

But in order for your mods to work, (and avoid getting those question marks) you must MERGE the folders.

I don't have a lot of time, so I tend to do things very quickly, so I can depend on 7z to do what I want without me having to 'hold its hand', every time. 7z is the absolute best there is.

For your information on how to fix the question mark trouble:

Look inside your data folder, and see if there are any subfolders inside your data folder called Data (so that you have two Data folders) if you do, that's wrong.

When you look inside your data folder, if you have any (usually yellow) subfolders that are named *the mod name you tried to install*, that's wrong.

Mods usually have three elements (at least):

one file called *.esp (yourdownloadedmod.esp)

one folder called Textures

one folder called Meshes

The esp you should see when you look in your Data folder. That's where it belongs.

Everything in the Meshes and Textures folders needs to be MERGED

into the existing Meshes and Textures folders in your Oblivion/Data folder.

I would suggest 7zip as well: open-source roots, decent support, and it doesn't get stuck.

Adding my own two Septims to Myrmaad's advice, you might opt for installing OBSE and Oblivion Mod Manager...

The first package's enhanced scripting abilities made even more sophisticated mods possible.

The second is an excellent tool to manage your modules, and it makes installing new content a breeze for those plugins supporting the OMOD format (using 7zip compression, too).

You can also use it to turn "traditional" mods into OMODs, which makes life a lot easier whenever you need to reinstall something.

The Winrar is a try before you buy program. They expect some cash if you keep using it. 7-zip is FREE. And besides that they don't expect you to pay them anything. 7-zip will work just fine for winrar, zip, winzip, tugzip and even 7z compressed files. You really don't need anything else.
