Hunger/Thirst/Sleep Mod Help

I'm in the process of creating a very realistic version of Fallout 3.

So far, using the GECK, I have managed to painstakingly provide realistic weapon damage from bullet velocity and damage to grenade spread and so on. I have also upped the cost of many items to match real world costs, so a grenade will run around 75 caps, a Beretta pistol (was 9mm) is around 300+ caps, assault rifles near the 1000+. Food is also very costly since it is now essential and starvation in the wastelands a problem, and stimpacks are around 275 caps.

And that brings me to making food and water a very essential part of wasteland survival.

The Question: Is there a smart way to go about creating a situation where no food, no water and no sleep will bring penalties over time? And as a bonus question, is there a way to turn of Karma when recruiting followers like Jericho?

That's really it, the mod is coming along very well and I'm hoping to turn the D.C. Mall into the "War-Zone" so many Wasteland denziens claimed it to be. My vision is having your character create a small squad of followers and having this become a necessity for dealing with the army of Super-Mutants overtaking the Mall. Realism and immersion has always been a big thing for me and for many of my friends who play my mods.

Thanks for your help guys now and in the past when I was designing Oblivion mods.

Sounds like something I'd definitely use, if you pull it off.

Maybe if you went for extreme periods of time without sleep, start blacking out and having minor hallucinations... Your character should gradually start losing intelligence and endurance after a while too, if you go too long. Maybe balance this out by being able to sleep anywhere, at the risk of being attacked while doing so.

Starvation would probably most effect your strength, with your endurance being a close second, followed by diminishing health.

Hunger and sleep loss would both likely effect your ability to aim a weapon.

I'm thinking thirst would probably have similar effects to starvation, though more immediate.

Some ideas, anyway.

I'm am very interested to see a realistic survival mod for fallout 3.

One of the major things in f3 that i was.. not so much disappointed, but what i could see would bring a large amount of immersion was survival. Its a wasteland after all. Things like food, clean-enough water, and a safe place to sleep are essential to survival.

Further intensifying this notion was recently reading a book called "The Road" which is largely about survival in a post-apoc land (Its a really good book too, so if you're a reader look into it =) )

I am pants at modding, and I wonder really what could be edited in f3 and what is 'hard-coded' into the game. Much like what you're asking in the opening post.

Anyway, a few things I am looking for in a survival mod(just offering some ideas =) ) :

Hunger: You character needs a 'hunger level', which slowly degenerates over time. It's rate should be so that you're encouraged to eat every 6 hours or so, going over that makes you 'hungry' for some negative effects like maybe a loss of perception(you're distracted). Its not necessarily harmful at this stage tho. After a day of no food you are 'famished' for a greater penalty to maybe all skills, a few stats, and your movement speed. Over three days and you're starving, for greater penalties.

Food: In my opinion pre-war food is far too common in fallout3, food in general is pretty plentiful. Food should be scarce, the kind of thing that makes you really need to think about 'offing' that wandering wastelander to take his pork'n'beans. Also so that finding some molerats out in the wasteland isnt just an inconvenience that uses a few rounds of ammo, but you might even go searching for them for a bite to eat.

Thirst: Similar but separate to hunger is thirst. Its effects would be pretty obvious, blacking out, negative stats and skills. If you feel that having separate thirst and hunger is a bit much you prolly could roll them into one. I would suggest tho that open water in the wasteland would have a lot more negative effects than how it currently is.

Sleep: I found it pretty.. poor, that you didnt need to sleep at all in fallout3. I believe you should be encouraged to sleep almost every night. And on top of that, finding a safe place to sleep is a must, else you'll attract [some kind of random encounters] while you sleep. I do think this would be pretty had t incorporate into fallout 3, the idea of a 'safe' sleeping spot. but I guess you could just go with random chance.. in the open wasteland is the greatest chance, less chance inside locations, and minimal to none in towns. Night time should probably be darker, so you're more encouraged to sleep at night, unless you're specifically making a nocturnal kind of character... Not sure how you'd balance that. Going too long without sleep might cause you to fall unconscious and sleep for a few hours whether you want to or not. Based on your perception you could wake up before random encounters are too close. Many things, many things =)

Radiation: Radiation is pretty piss-poor in fallout3 after playing games like STALKER. I feel it needs quite a bigger oompf you get you to avoid radiated areas, food and water. Probably the easiest thing i can think of to make it more debilitating is an immediate health-degeneration when you're over a low amount of radiation. If you mix in the Hunger aspect of the game, it might cause you to occasionally throw up, wasting your last meal.

Anyway I don't want to ramble on too long especially since i'd be useless as far as helping the making of such a mod, but a few of my ideas I'd like to see in a survival-orientated version of fallout 3. =)

(PS, if you do end up making one Midnight2007, I see you have quite a few plans for your mod in your opening post, and I would pretty please ask you made a separate stand-alone survival mod with just the hunger/sleep etc modifications. Then again, its your show! =) I'll be keeping an eye out.)

I came up with this idea while working on my mod. In my mod I have a water basin scripted to replace empty Nuka-Cola bottles with Purified Water bottles. From there I evolved my idea to have Purified Water bottles not go away after you use them, instead just turn back into empty Nuka-Cola bottles (too lazy to make a model for an empty water bottle right now). Then I came up with the idea for a Canteen. You can fill it up at this water basin in your home, and it holds enough water for 4-6 drinks, and when you run out you have to fill it up again. I though this would compliment mods that try to add realism to the game by making the character thirsty/hungry/tired/etc.
