balthazar9086
Hi guys, For the longest while now, I've been experiencing issues with Dragon Age Origins. When I first boot up the game, it runs perfectly fine and buttery smooth. However, after about 2-3 min of playing time, I will begin to experience issues with the graphics. It begins with the in-engine cutscenes, and then spreads to the gameplay itself. The problem looks something like this: an in-engine cutscene (usually dialogue) will start to play, it will play for 2-3 seconds, and then pause very very briefly, almost like someone froze the cutscene for a millisecond and then unpaused it. Again, the pause is really short & quick, but it repeats every 2-3 seconds. It is rather annoying! After that, running around the map will also see this very quick pause every 2-3 seconds. It's driving me crazy! I've tried disabling all but one core for DAOrigines.exe, and I've tried disabling frame buffer effects, but the problem always comes back. I'm listing the mods that I use below to see if someone can help me figure this out. Thanks! 1) Dialogue Tweaks2) Bodahn Tweaks3) Extra Dog Slot4) Faster Swing for 2 Handed Weapons5) Forced Deathblows6) Improved Atmosphere7) Lock Bash8) Morrigan Restoration Patch Dialog Fixpack9) Permanent Summons10) Quartermaster Tolby11) Skip the Fade12) Dog Gift Tweaks13) Dragon Age Redeisgned14) JB3textures15) More Hairstyles16) Extended Dog Talents17) Respecification18) Two Specializations Sten19) Madd Gift Guide I have Dragon Age Origins Ultimate Edition with patch 1.05 installed. mcgoy
I can only report what I've been told..... 6 & 14 are both said to cause slowdowns because of the massive changes that they make. I don't know ALL of your mods so I can't say either of those are the cause, but I've read (been told) that if you don't have a gaming computer that is WELL over the minimum requirements they will cause lag. I don't know enough about desktops to know if your computer meets the minimum requirements or is 'well over'. I don't have either of those two mods installed, but have a lot more mods installed than you do and don't have that particular problem with lag. Thandal
I echo everything mcgoy just said. Have almost every mod you list (except for IA and JB3) installed. Had an issue of ever-increasing load times when transitioning from one scene/area to another (after 1-3 hours of play this would reach 5+ minutes of waiting on "Loading...") But that turned out to be due to specific issues with 1.04 and DX-10.1 graphics cards, (of which there were only a few, including mine) and was resolved with the 1.05 patch. Never seen the behaviour you're describing. Does it disappear if you disable/remove ALL mods? What about just removing the two suspects? In any case, once you've got the 1.05 patch, disabling CPU cores is probably NOT going to help anything. BTW: After getting burned, I refuse to ever use IA because some of the changes it makes cannot be undone by removing it. If you equip/carry items made of the non-standard materials it provides, your Saves made after that point cannot be loaded without it... "Force Load" won't work. balthazar9086
Thanks guys. I'm going to delete Improved Atmosphere and JB3 Textures (always found it overly sharpened, anyway), and then reinstall the game. Two more questions though. 1) With patch 1.05 applied on top of my Ultimate Edition, is a 4GB patch still needed? I'm currently using NTCore's 4GB patch, but I'm not sure if patch 1.05 addresses this issue already.2) Do you guys prefer to install mods using daupdater, or is it completely safe to use DAModder? Thanks!!! Edited January 12, 2013 by balthazar9086
mcgoy
1) huh? I have no clue what "NTCore's 4GB" patch is or what it does. Patch 1.05 is needed to activate the DLC that comes with DA/UE so you do need that. Although I also wonder if NTCore's 4GB patch might not have had something to do with your problem. Before I installed 1.05, I had TERRIBLE lag, my house was clean because I could go clean something while waiting for a load when transitioning areas. And I never had the problem that you described with cutscenes. 2) daupdater. I hear that DAModder has some nice features, but I've never used it. Thandal
Taking your questions in reverse order, a) I happen to use DAO-ModManager (DAMM), instead of DAModder (DAM) or the built-in DAUpdater. The differences are: DAUpdater can ONLY handle ".dazip" files, DAM can handle ".dazip", and ".zip", but can't handle ".override" files, and DAMM can handle ".dazip" and ".override", but not ".zip". Since ".zip" files just require manual extraction to the right folder, (which I already know) and since I happen to use multiple ".override" mods, my choice is obvious! b) After patch 1.03 caused me tremendous CtD problems I started using a different solution to the RAM limit (with a 64-bit/8GB rig, it mattered more for me than for folk running WinXP.) But like mcgoy, since applying the 1.05 patch I haven't bothered and everything seems to be running fine.
balthazar9086
@mcgoy Thanks for your reply. Actually the problem that I'm describing started long before I used the 4GB patcher so hopefully it's not the cause. But I think I will stop using it just in case. @Thandal Thanks for your reply also. I, too, use .dazip files and will manually extrac .zip files, so maybe I'll stick to DAM so long as there is no difference in its handling of "dazips" from the daupdater. Last question, I promise, do you still use Dialogue Tweaks? Thanks!!!
Thandal
Sure I use DT! (Plus a couple of "DT Compatible" versions of other mods.) I've posted my list before. Currently running with about 1.4GB's worth between my "\override" folder and what DAMM is handling.
balthazar9086
Well this is frustrating. I've completely reinstalled the game and reapplied the mods (save for JB3Textures & Improved Atmosphere, both of which I deleted), but while playing Leliana's Song, that micro-stuttering came back... Either it's one of the other mods, or I have to tweak Catalyst Control Center... EDIT: I've turned off tesselation in CCC and left it at "use application settings". Will report back if those stuttering/mini-pauses come back. Might be a small chance that I can add Improved Atmosphere back into my mod list... mcgoy
I don't suppose you did a little test run without any mods, did you? Just to check if this is a mod related issue? We don't have very many mods in common, but I don't see any others that I would immediately suspect of causing the problems that you're having. Yes, I also use Dialogue Tweaks - and others - I just had to be careful to follow instructions. Something that I'm not always good at ;)
