A story for my character - Vincent

Hi guys, I've been thinking up a story for my new character, Vincent. He's a Mage who spent time as a Squire and as an Apprentice in the Synod before returning to his native Skyrim to join the Collage of Winterhold. I tend to write these histories as a journal, or biography, I've got a bit of it done and was hoping you could read it and tell me what you think, thanks.

"Nords don't like Mages". That's what my parents always told me whenever I asked them why we left Skyrim. I was always perplexed by that, we're Nords and my father is a mage, but we like him. Obviously I know now it's not as simple as my parents would say, but those words often made me feel uncomfortable talking to other Nords.

When we arrived in Cyrodiil, my father quickly found work as the local mage in Cheydinhall, my mother and older sister got work in a tavern. I was sent to the Castle in hopes I could become a Squire to a Knight, it didn't work out.

I was good with a sword and knew how to be a squire, but I didn't like it. All the bowing and posturing to fat men who think themselves better than me? No thanks. Besides, I had known what I wanted to do since I was just 5 years old, I wanted to be Mage like my father.

My father was adamant that I would not become a Mage, he knew I wouldn't be accepted by normal society (just like him) and wanted a better life for me. He knew though that I already had great skill in magic even without training. It took me being literally kicked out of the Castle after I laced Sir Evan's food with enough Dragon's Tongue to make him fall over the waiting staff running for the privy during dinner with the Count for him to listen. I grant you it wasn't a smart thing to do, but it was entirely worth it!

After my dismissal, I managed to convince my father to let me study magic. He decided to try and show me it wasn't all good by sending me to the Imperial City to learn under the Synod. Though it didn't go as well as either of us were hoping, in fact if I had not joined the Synod, perhaps he, my mother and sister maybe alive today...

Next part

A few days after my 17th birthday, I said goodbye to my Mother and Sister and hopped aboard the cart loaded with only the bare minimum: some clothes, books and a few other personal items. Not sure why we could only take so little to the Arcane University, but that's the rules.

My father and I set off towards the Imperial City just after breakfast early morning, we spoke very little on the journey only to tell me what to do when we got there and how to act around the other Mages. He warned me that most of them would be even more pompous than the Knights at the castle. He was trying to make me have second thoughts, but I knew this is what I wanted, and I could handle anything these Mages throw at me.

We arrived at the City two days after setting off, stopping at the Stables outside the Talos District. Father wouldn't go any further with me though, he said: "They need to see you alone, as an independent Mage, not walking through the city with your father like a child." He was right of course, though I wish he wasn't.

---------------------------

The city was amazing, I've never seen anything so grand. That said, there were definitely parts I didn't like; I came across a noble who ordered his servant to beat a beggar who had dared to ask him for coin, all the while guards simply walked past doing nothing to intervene. I approached the noble and 'suggested' he leave the man alone, introducing myself as a Mage. The noble elegantly backed off, apologising for his actions, he was clearly afraid of me.

The beggar thanked me, almost ripping my hand off by shaking it so hard. I pressed a couple of Septims into his hand and walked off. By the time I got to the University, I was late for my introduction which did not impress the Mages one bit. I was shown around the University and to my quarters which I would be sharing with 4 other students. I was then introduced to Decimus Victus, who I would be learning under.

Decimus had the look of a Stereotypical mage, long robes and a long beard. He must have been at least 62 when I met him. He walked with a staff which he used to prop himself up, his leg had been injured many years ago when he himself was an apprentice. He spoke in a cold raspy voice which put me on edge whenever he spoke.

Decimus took me to his study, it was covered in bookshelves overflowing with dusty tomes, there was also several paintings on the walls, including one of Decimus at a younger age, a self portrait. The room oozed with magical energy, he had used this study since he was first given it when named a full Mage of the Synod. I was enticed by the magics performed in this room, but there was also something distressing about it too.

He asked me if I wanted some tea, I accepted though sorely wish I didn't, he would put crushed Skeever eyes in, saying it improved the taste, I disagreed but didn't want to seem arrogant so I kept quiet. He then proceeded to tell me what being his Apprentice would entail "Collecting ingredients for my experiments will be one of your main tasks, you'll sometimes have to go far across Tamriel to find them. Also if you would be so kind to help me with a few chores around the University. In return I promise to share all I have learned and experienced over my life as a Mage. Is this fine with you?" I accepted on the spot, I got the feeling "a few chores" was an understatement but it was worth it.

"Good", he said "then these are for you..." he handed me a set of robes of great craftsmanship, they weren't long and dress-like but rather more practical. He then gave me a stern look as I noticed I had not drank my tea, I quickly gulped it down nearly for it to come back up seconds later. He smiled as I drank it, asking "How was it?", I didn't want to be rude so I just said "Great thank you", the first of many lies to come.

He then commanded me to follow as he slowly led the way to the Orrery, one of the few observatories in all of Tamriel, it was quite the sight. Decimus was the the leading Astronomer of the Synod and would spend much of his time here, as would I but mostly to realign or clean the lenses.

By now, the hour was growing late so I was dismissed to my quaters by Decimus, giving the order to see him at his home tomorrow at 9am. I found upon arriving that my bags were already at my bedside, placed there by the guards. I quickly unpacked them into the draws provided and fell onto my new bed falling asleep almost instantly.

That's all I've got so far, what do you think?
