In need of help

Hello everyone :)

I'm new to the forum and modding in Skyrim. Actually this is my first mod attempt. I've been reading around for a while now but I really haven't found what I was looking for. I want to create a playable race using a custom mesh I have. Are these the right steps to take starting my own playable race?:

1. Open Creation Kit and duplicate a race. Do name/stat editing to the duplicated race and save it. The CK will create the .esp file. This will serve as a data reference for the finished mesh / texture edited race?

2. Extract the meshes.bsa & textures.bsa archives. (FOMM)

3. On desktop setup folders to resemble that of Skyrim folder hiearchy. ie meshes/actor/char/charasset/racename/body

4. Open 3ds max and import the mesh.nif (with skeleton option checked) to edit.

5. Delete the vanilla mesh from the skeleton and place the custom mesh onto the skeleton.

6. Adjust the bones to fit the custom mesh placed over the skeleton.

7. Use skin modifier to bind the custom mesh to the skeleton. ie click add button, all, and unselect the bones that won't be used to move that particular piece/mesh part.

8. Adding a BSDismemberSkin modifier is necessary?

9. Export nif file.

If these steps are right, What would I have to do in nifscope so that it works in Skyrim?

Also since the .esp is a reference for mod / plugin data, then how would I edit it, so that Skyrim will read from my created meshes & textures folders for my playable race?

All help appreciated,

CB

It could be that I'm so tired can barely keep my eyes open, but the list don't make a lot of sense for what you want to do. This is the way I know how to add a custom body to a race.

Go to ArmorAddon - Duplicate a NakedTorso(Race) (probably a race closest to the one your making). Add your .nif file to the ArmorAddon as the model. Next go to armor, duplicate SkinNaked. Delete the NakedTorso's under the model window, you will want to keep the hands and feet unless you have .nif files for them to. Name it really what you want, I always keep names close to the vanilla ones to help keep it organized. Make your race, I duplicate a race that is closest to the one I'm making. In the race menu go to BodyData and look for a drop down box called Skin, put your new armor there. As far as I know you can have any file path you want when adding a new body, just replacers need to follow a certain file path.

For NifSkope settings look at how others have done there body's.

If you need any more help let me know, I'll be in the Creation Kit for the next two days, and on and off Nexus.

Thank you. I'd really appreciate the help. I really didn't want to say anything at first, but creation kit can be kind of scary after I load the skyrim.esm. I get that feeling like i'm going to mess something up, especially since i'm a first time modder xD. I'm going to start working on my nif today. I'm going to follow that horse tutorial to set it up in nifscope. ;D
