metroid13
(Made a similar thread on the Bethesda forums but I figure I should try to get your opinions, too, as it might be a mod issue) Right - so I've noticed that my game has a habit of beginning to slow down the more I play it. When starting a new game everything runs smooth; as I get deeper into the game, however (particularly in the area of New Vegas) it all begins to get choppier, response times lag, loading and saving takes forever, and menus take a long time to load in - this persists even if I leave particularly laggy areas. I've experimented, and reloading an older save will make the game run smooth, whereas if I use a more recent save I get the problem I've described. I'm pretty much at my wits end here. I've tried employing the .dll fix, the Stutter Remover, and the 4GB fix. Nothing works. I'm running a fairly modern system with a very good video card, capable of running New Vegas at Ultra settings with no discernible slowdown (at least when I first start the game...) In terms of mods, I have Fellout, and Interior Lighting in the visuals department, and I have a few mods that add more detail and buildings to certain areas of the game, as well as some quest mods. If you need a precise list, I'll provide one, but if anyone can suggest a fix or knows the nature of the issue I'm having, I'd really appreciate it! Thanks! Xaranth
Do you make a new save every time you save, or are you overwriting them?
metroid13
Do you make a new save every time you save, or are you overwriting them? Overwriting. Do you think it might be save bloat, then?
Xaranth
Partially bloat, partially corruption. As I understand it, when the engine overwrites an older save, to try and speed the process they just overwrite the changed parts, which can lead to little errors creeping in one at a time. I had a similar problem my last playthrough, a lot of which went away once I stopped overwriting saves and started making new saves all the time. metroid13
Worth a shot, I guess. I'll start a new game and see if it helps. I do sort of notice that once I get to really heavy areas (like New Vegas) that lag pretty much stays with the game even if I'm far away from laggy areas. I've also observed the game slowing down significantly if I carried a lot of caps on me, and the slowdown persisted even after I cleared out my inventory. Thoughts? Also, thanks for the prompt response
Xaranth
Best suggestions I have are to look up the 4GB Loader and the New Vegas Stutter Remover, and use them together. Also consider disabling texture packs and looking up ini file settings for larger memory systems if you have one. EDIT: Also, you mightn't need to start a new game for improvement; I just turned off autosave and stopped overwriting saves in my last playthrough, and though it didn't go back to fresh game performance, there WAS a discernable improvement. metroid13
I AM using both of those already, lol. No texture packs either, only graphic enhancements are New Vegas Redesigned (NPC enhancement) and a few things that modify the lighting a bit. Would that do it? Xaranth
Depending on the lighting, that could be it. NV's lighting engine is really badly designed. Some of it you'll probably have to live with. And depending on how that NPC mod works it could be a cuplrit. If they forgot to turn off low-level processing for their NPCs...
metroid13
I'm using Fellout (http://newvegas.nexusmods.com/mods/34888), mainly, and something called Interior Lighting (http://newvegas.nexusmods.com/mods/35794) Dunno if either would really be the culprit. metroid13
Just doing a follow up on this, now that I started a new game using different saves (using CASM, actually.) I'm also using the windowed mode mod. There's no discernible difference. The game continues to get slow the more I play it, even after removing the graphic mods I mentioned above. I'm really at loose ends here... anyone have any suggestions?
