Less "real" please.

I think the Elder Scrolls has been becoming to real, it's not set on earth. One of the real strengths of Morrowind is that it's alien. The trees are strange, people live in giant crab and snail shells, there are huge mushroom like fungi that houses can be built into. The transport system used huge insects like creatures. Even the stone architecture is strange.

Oblivion, except Shivering Isles, moved way more toward earth.

And Skyrim seems like earth remade by a group of rpg players. The whole vib of the place feels generic fantasy.

Then there all the mods that add real (aka even more specifically earthlike) creatures and things. Maybe the Dragonborn DLC (if it ever ships) will reverse this some.

So why did I post the near whine, in the faint hope that the incredibly talented modding community might bend some of their time to making Skyrim less earthlike.

I can definitely feel you on this one. One need only look at the Morrowind bestiary, architecture, culture, armors, magic, etc. to see just how different TES used to be.

But--this should make sense to a certain extent, no? Humans are... humans, no matter where they're at. Cyrodiil, Skyrim... both human lands. Morrowind... not so much. It wouldn't make much sense to just insert random "alien" things into these provinces because they are based off of real-world historical precedents (High Rock and Hammerfell as well). It just comes with the territory of making 1/2 of Tamriel dominated by normal human beings; they've got to play by normal human rules.

Magic would be one area where there could be a ton more creativity (especially in Skyrim...), but not much else. Well, Skyrim kind of ret-conned Nord culture, making it more generic fantasy Viking than TES Nord. But that sort of comes with the whole dilution of dialogue in the series, the opportunities for cultural expression have fallen by the wayside (since so much of culture is expressed via idiom and speech).

Anyway, here's to hoping the next TES is in Summerset Isles!

Well you guys need to realize that each of these provinces have their own unique settings. Morrowind was from an early time, where demi-gods ruled according to the lore. Skyrim is a snow-filled lands home to a different kind of people and beasts. I wish they added in more foreign animals, because well you could easily import them/etc. But anyways, each land has it's own feel. Cyrodiil was the human-like ruled empire, morrowind was the ashland ruled by the dark elves, and skyrim is home to the nords. The dragonborn DLC should hopefully bring back some of those otherly feels, and also open up a new avenue for modders to expand upon.

Pretty much what everyone else said. You in a generic fantasy part of the continent, if you want the alien stuff you got to be in the elven lands. I personally enjoyed all the environments from each game, though morrowind didn't seem too alien to me. Giant insects and mushrooms just seem how I would picture a fantasy swamp, and the ash lands is just a volcanic desert. I did love the ascetics of morrowind though, especially the telvanni towers. Always got lost in them.

Edit- forgot to mention someone's working on a morrowind houses in skyrim mod. Pretty much adding some morrowind stuff to the eastern parts of skyrim. There is also those large mods that seek to incorporate the other provinces, but who knows when they'll finish.
