Please help. Having problems getting my game to work at all...

Greetings,

This afternoon, I more or less lost my use of Oblivion. Suffice to say, it will not load. I have tried troubleshooting the problem to no avail thusfar. Therefore, I am here on the forums seeking some expertise to point me the correct direction. My game was functioning just fine this am. Then, in anticipation of a new Mod coming out, I went to --http://obse.silverlock.org/ to retrieve the newer stable build of OBSE. Following download and installation, I ran the game to make sure it worked, which it did.

There were three mods I had chosen to download to try out which were referenced as OBSE mods on the page at silverlock.org. Those were:

1. Wondrous Items V2 - located at --http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=10115

2.Ring of Wings Levitation - located at --http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=7094

3. Quest Item Tag Remover - located at --http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=10956

I installed the relevant meshes, textures, and .esp files into my Oblivion Data Directory and fired up OBSE to try them out. This is where I initially encountered the problem. OBSE opens what appears to be a DOS window, which then opens up into Oblivion. However, instead of the DOS window leading to the game, I observed the large window open in black, (it always does), then disappear and the desktop is visible again.

Thinking that perhaps one of these mods caused my problem, I went into OBMM and tried disabling them one at a time. Then attempting to start the game. This has served me well in the past when I suddenly found that certian mods were inconpatible. As a point of fact, it has proven to be a litmus test in my growing interest in mods...

To date, all three have been disabled and the game will not start at all. I, within the last hour, have uninstalled, and reinstalled Oblivion to my tower PC in the event that something essential got deleted. However, none of this solves the problem.

As I do not want to dump the massive undertaking of making my own, fun to play, version of the game... I humbly ask for assistance from those more knowledgeable than myself in these matters.

Thank you for reading my banter, and I look forward to your responses...

ETA: This is my current mod list, if it proves to be helpful in diagnosing the problem.

I take it your starting your game using OBSE which is required if you use it. I installed it with no game problems at all

use this load order guide for starters

General Load-Order Guidelines

Here are the guidelines that I adhere to, personally.

~ Unofficial Oblivon Patch should always be first on the list. The fixes are great, but most aren't essential, so if a mod overwrites them its not a big deal, and the fixes have the potential for screwing up other mods if loaded later.

~ Offical Content (DLC's) should be loaded last, until you complete all quests associated with them (that includes buying all furniture for the houses and whatnot). Once they're complete, they can be safely moved up in the list. This is especially important for Knights of the Nine, which will have some fairly major problems unless loaded last (unless you get the UOP for KotN)

~ Major overhaul mods (OOO, Frans, MMM) should be loaded near the end. That gives you the most complete experience with any of those particular mods. It also lets you carefully choose which other mods to load afterwards... only move mods that you know will conflict and that you want the changes from. For example, I have Improved Soul Gems below OOO because I know that OOO changes the icons of some of the SG's, and ISG needs to be below to show through.

Some people will recommend putting larger mods first, but personally I disagree. There are a number of mods out there that make minor tweaks, and loading after a large mod will end up completely overwriting a chunk from one of the bigger mods because of the way conflicts work in Oblivion (even one minor change will take precedence over the entire record... for example, simply tweaking the speed of a weapon can cause every stat of that weapon to be retained to vanilla levels if loaded later).

So basically, it stacks up like this...

Oblivion.esm

Unofficial Oblivion Patch

<Minor Mods / DLC's (Post-Completion)>

<Major Overhaul Mod/Mods>

<Mods that specifically conflict with overhauls and need to take precedence>

<DLC's (Pre-Completion)>

Expanded Load-Order Guidelines

by dev_akm

I would extend this to include:

Oblivion.esm

Unofficial Oblivion Patch

<Weather/Environment/Sound Mods>

<Minor Mods/New Items/Houses/DLC's (Post-Completion)>

<Major Overhaul Mods>

<Mods that specifically conflict with overhauls and need to take precedence>

<DLC's (Pre-Completion)>

<Quests>

<Compatibility Patches/UOMP/Merged Leveled Lists>

And a special-case warning for Knights.esp (Knights of the Nine) -- you may not be able to move it earlier than some other mods (some people have had problems after moving it before OOO, for example).

That's basically the structure I use and I have 140+ mods working well together.

Another way of describing this (posted by DMan77):

....

Oblivion

unoffical patch

Deeper realism mods that add sights and sounds

added content like weapons/items

gameplay changes, like 'must eat and sleep'

The OOO type

the 'new begining' type mod..

Thank you for your resonse, dezdimona :happy:

I am currently in process of following the advice given regarding the load order of the mods I have.

I did notice that you made mention of an Unofficial Oblivion Patch. I searched the forums for it and cannot find it currently. Would you happen to have a link?

On a side note, I couldn't help but giggle a bit when I saw that it was you who responded to my call for assistance. The very mod I was preparing for was the same that Montana BlueSkies and yourself are releasing in the near future...

Okay,

I tried reconfiguring the load order and came up with this... past some deletions and such:

The game is still not loading. I am not sure if my order is still askew, or, if there is another problem I remain unaware of. The OBSE link that I put on my PC allows me to see the DOS window, followed by the opening of the Oblivion window which hovers nearly covering the screen on my pc for about 3 seconds, and then goes right back to the desktop. I have taken notice that this is longer than before, (I was actually waiting for it to completely fire up), but it still will not run.

Any suggestions?

have you tried starting your game useing OBMM?

Yes, since I first downloaded OBMM, I have been starting the game using that option.

At this point, instead of things getting more muddled, I think it best to wipe the whole thing and reestablish everything.

I have my most recent saved game in a seperate folder. And am in process of downloading my mods again and reinstalling Oblivion via the CCcleaner/ defrag/ restart method described by bben in another thread I was reading. My plan is to re-establish the backround and then attempt to plug my save game in there somehow.

I had to do this with Morrowind in the past, but it had nothing to do with mods. Mainly issues with Vista.

Iwill report on how it goes, as I am in process this am. It took quite some time to defrag the hard drive, neccesitating a nap.

I was going to mention bben's instructions...but I see that was not necessary...good luck!!!

Unbelievable...

:wallbash:

It still is not loading. This following a complete wipe of all files Oblivion related, running CCcleaner until there were no conflicts. Restarting the PC, running CCcleaner again, defragmenting the hard drive, restarting the PC, and downloading a shortened mod list whilst reinstalling Oblivion, and KOTN,SI.

I have the same problem. I start Oblivion using either obse, obmm, or it's normal icon shortcut and get the same thing respectively. It opens up the window, stays black for three seconds, and crashes back to the desktop.

I am out of Ideas, help!?!

I think I found the problem. :wacko:

The mod,

Summonable Private Quarters
located at --http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=5568

I deleted this mod from OMOD a few minutes ago while backtracking what was most recent on my mod list.

The game runs now, and I believe the issue may be that I downloaded the

Summonable Private Quarters v230 SI_Cobl_OBSE
as I have OBSE installed. Perhaps the crashing was generated by the SI_Cobl aspect, as when I search that out, it leads me to another mod that I do not have installed. I plan to make the author aware of my problem. But be warned folks, as this has cost me about 16 hours of my free time to figure out through trial and error.

Thank you kindly, dezdimona, for attempting to help me out in this thread. I am really new to modding and am stumbling my way through things...
