Ripple,

The only question I have with cleaning some of the mods with TES5Edit is that even the actual master file from the game has a lot of dirty edits. Should I be cleaning those as well? Those are master files from Bethesda, right? For example:

Update.esm Active

Contains dirty edits: 52 ITM, 1 UDR records. Needs TES5Edit cleaning. (http://www.creationkit.com/TES5Edit_Cleaning_Guide_-_TES5Edit)

Dawnguard.esm Active

Contains dirty edits: 602 ITM, 82 UDR records. Needs TES5Edit cleaning. (http://www.creationkit.com/TES5Edit_Cleaning_Guide_-_TES5Edit)

Bash Tag suggestion(s): {{BASH: Delev, Relev}}

HearthFires.esm Active

Contains dirty edits: 171 ITM, 11 UDR records. Needs TES5Edit cleaning. (http://www.creationkit.com/TES5Edit_Cleaning_Guide_-_TES5Edit)

Those from Bethesda directly, so should I be 'cleaning' those, as well?

These are the mods I need to clean:

Better Dynamic Snow.esp Active

Contains dirty edits: 6 ITM, 0 UDR records. Needs TES5Edit cleaning. (http://www.creationkit.com/TES5Edit_Cleaning_Guide_-_TES5Edit)

Beautiful Whiterun.esp Active

Contains dirty edits: 79 ITM, 2 UDR records. Needs TES5Edit cleaning. (http://www.creationkit.com/TES5Edit_Cleaning_Guide_-_TES5Edit)

Immersive Weapons.esp Active

Bash Tag suggestion(s): {{BASH: Delev}}

Contains dirty edits: 2 ITM, 0 UDR records. Needs TES5Edit cleaning. (http://www.creationkit.com/TES5Edit_Cleaning_Guide_-_TES5Edit)

Duel - Combat Realism.esp Active

Contains dirty edits: 2 ITM, 0 UDR records. Needs TES5Edit cleaning. (http://www.creationkit.com/TES5Edit_Cleaning_Guide_-_TES5Edit)

The Dance of Death - Dawnguard Edition.esp Active

Contains dirty edits: 7 ITM, 0 UDR records. Needs TES5Edit cleaning. (http://www.creationkit.com/TES5Edit_Cleaning_Guide_-_TES5Edit)

I'll take off Dragon Souls to Perk per your suggestion. I just realized Deadly Dragon has this. I'll have to look into the MCM for that.

A bit of update: I tried deleting the Skyrim.ini and Skyrimpref.ini, then restarting the game, making necessary changes to the Skyrimpref.ini (to accomodate for the K ENB I'm using and disable mouse acceleration) and afterwards it seems to be playable with no CTD for about 30 minutes. I cannot say it's resolved yet until I can play without crash for 1 hour+ (or hopefully without CTD at all). It seems the .INI file might have been tweaked beyond normal capacity that might interfere with the game stability?

I know I have a tweak for the 'Armed to the Teeth - Easy version' for that and maybe that conflicts with any of the mods?

Not every CTD is from the game itself - some are from external sources.

Here is a link to my troubleshooting blog.

Be sure to go through the general section before going into the Skyrim section.

This is updated from time to time so come back later for more.

If you do use this, Let me know what worked and what didn't.

Yes, clean all the esp's and esm's flagged by BOSS as containing dirty entries, including the DLCs and the patch esm.

Yes, ini settings can cause problems. For example,

ugridstoload=5

This should not be changed.

From l2edshift of 'Deadly Dragons':

Despite being posted on popular and well known websites, uGrids is not a value that you should touch. Even if you have the most powerful hardware available at this very second (i7 3960X 5.0 Ghz, x2 GTX 680 4GB in SLI, and solid state hard drives) and you've overclocked the pants off of it, Skyrim's engine simply cannot handle it. Many many people have had a wide range of problems with this. From stability problems to (in the most common case) irreparable save game corruption.

'Save game corruption' might be stretching it a bit, but instability, definitely.

bben46,

Thanks so much for the detailed info. I will try each one and report back, but I think the most useful is the General Crash help for Skyrim. I'll see if I can post back some results later.

Ripple,

I believe I might have found the culprit. The ugridstoLoad was modified (could accidentally by me when I played around on older Skyrim version) to 9. That could explain why the gameplay is much smoother after I deleted both INI files. I will have to do another playthrough and try walk outdoor from one place to the other without saving. I'll also do the clean up mods, but whats the effect on running the game with dirty mods? Could it cause CTD?

I tend to want to wait until Dragonborn is out. I'm afraid it will update Skyrim, causing all kinds of incompatibilities with the mods and then I will have to wait for the mods to update again (of course the retexture/HD texture being the exception). I'll see if I can do the walkthrough outdoor without crash after cleaning the mods, then try add the mods I wanted one by one (Really want Skyrim Monster mod and Climate of Tamriel back).

Ugridstoload was a variable that could be changed in Oblivion to get better visuals. But anytime it gets changed in Skyrim it can make previous saves unusable. And any save made with the new value will be unusable when you change it back. I have seen reports that even after changing it back - the older saves may still be unusable.

Here is what TweakGuides http://www.geforce.com/Optimize/Guides/the-elder-scrolls-v-skyrim-tweak-guide#1 says about Ugridsto load

While altering this variable is tempting given the image quality improvement it provides, you should experiment with any uGridsToLoad value in various areas, particularly those where you usually experience the lowest FPS. The default of 5 is already a good compromise of performance and image quality, but if struggling for FPS, you can drop it to a lower value such as 3, though Bethesda strongly advises against this as it may lead to game instability.

Importantly: Aside from lowering performance and causing potential instability due to the greatly increased resource usage when raising uGridsToLoad, if you save a game after you have altered this value, the new value will be incorporated into your saved game. This is worth noting because the game only allows you to load a saved game which has an equal or lower uGridsToLoad value than your current value; you will not be able to open a saved game with a higher uGridsToLoad value. This means if you lower your uGridsToLoad value again, you won't be able to load up the saves which used the higher value. So you should extensively test any change to your uGridsToLoad before committing to saving the game. If you need to revert a change in uGridsToload in an existing save game follow the steps below:

  1. Start Skyrim and load up a saved game.
  2. Use ALT+TAB to switch out of Skyrim and back to your Desktop.
  3. Edit the Skyrim.ini file as normal, modifying the uGridsToLoad variable to the desired lower value. Save Skyrim.ini and close it.
  4. Use ALT+TAB to switch back to Skyrim.
  5. Open the Command Console using the tilde ~ key and type refreshini.
  6. Save your game to a new save slot, and it should now have the correct new uGridsToLoad value.

It could be from my older tweaks of the game. Everytime I install a new mods or tweak a mod, I always start a new game and a new save.

Either way, starting a new game tonight with all the mods and the ugrids set to default. Will update as soon as I have more result.
