geoffchad
I figured I would just post a mod I've been working on with a buddy (spent a bit of time already, but still need to finish the layout and decorating). Pictures and details are soon to follow (though the holidays will put a crimp on progress). Story: Originally intended to be a version of Cheyenne Mountain back on the East coast, Vault 120 never delivered its final promise. The hope was to gather the important folks of Washington into the vault before the war actually commenced so that when the war was over they could emerge and simply return order. The vault had lofty goals - and the war came before it was complete. The first point of vault 120 was control. The folks at 120 could safely communicate and monitor (and in some cases control) every other vault from their own. Too bad that hardware never got installed. It was intended to be a "mastermind" vault for all the others - or so said the bill of sale. The complex featured an unparalleled stockpile of resources and space. More lavish than the other vaults of the DC area, it was supposed to give the residents a feeling of security that they could reside at a level the politicians could accept. But it was more. The politicians, terrified of the forthcoming war, were convinced that the war might last for years - perhaps even decades. Faced with the reality that they might not even outlive the nuclear winter, they were easily convinced by vault-tec to opt for a cryogenic stasis wing on the complex. The wing of cryogenic pods would be monitored by a group of civilian scientists, who would watch their vital signs and keep them alive through the years. Unlike the virtual reality pods of other vaults, these were true suspended animation with no ill effects or aging. A total of 480 pods were set to capture the majority of the politicians present and supporting staff. An awe-inspiring complex was designed for normal life so that even after the winter had ended, they awaken and live inside the vault in security and peace - venturing in and out as necessary. In reality, vault-tec never really liked the idea of having the majority of the government live on. This same government got the world into the mess it was in - why should they all survive? When the political regime hid under ground as the bombs fell they would discover only a quarter of the promised pods. What would they do to each other, once sealed in the vault, to guarantee their survival? Would the murder one another for a chance to save their years? Only 120 would survive - and vault 120 was born. Not to mention reducing the vault to 120 pods meant they sold a vault worth 4 times as much - and banked the remainder for other vault-tec projects. But the war came before the vault was completed. Without a completed and certified vault, Washington refused to use it - to their own deaths. The civilians and scientists working there to build the vault sealed themselves inside when the bombs began to fall. While the vault's common areas (for media events and tours to the politicians) were complete, only a few rooms of cryopods were actually ever built. Enough to survive. Enough to live on. Two hundred years later: The vaults location is unknown to the vault-tec database because it was never fully completed and was a political sanctuary. Even if found, the door requires a keycard and cannot be hacked. Some that were sealed in made it to the cryochambers. Others lived their lives. There will be struggle and turmoil that must be overcome, but a glimmer of hope - as what happens when you lock a hundred of your top cryogenics and terraforming scientists together for 200 years? Or perhaps things have gone sour - and all that remains is bitterness and an impossible dream... ----------Phase One:----------Locations:Vault 120 - ready to explore, complete with traders, supplies, and its own guards and labs. You can even get your own room.Project Mercury - a high speed rail system designed to link other military fortifications to DC - or rather what they managed to build in time. Located under vault 120.(I figure this might make a good means to move around to other 'interior' areas like if someone wanted to remake Quantico base or the other areas of DC. - It'll be open for others to use an expand). New missions:Inside 120, survivors will need your help in an attempt to fix some problems. Eventual use of Project Mercury from the Vault 120 station.A new member of the Brotherhood Outcasts at Fort Independence is quite intrigued by 120's existence. Will you plunder technology for profit at the scientists loss? The brotherhood of steel will be thrilled to learn about 120 - but what will happen? Problems:I don't have enough time yet!Getting audio in. Morrowind was obnoxious. Oblivion felt better. Perhaps 'GECK' will provide some better results.Getting faces properly edited for unique NPCs. Doedel
Your back-story might need some slight changes, namely in the part about a) the government wanting to survive the war, b) Vault-Tec not wanting them to. All of the Vaults were created in conjunction with the Enclave. Prior to the nuclear holocaust the Enclave was a "shadow government" composed of many high-ranking military and political officials who had secret plans to survive an inevitable nuclear war by having Vaults created throughout the US, and then using those survivors as both test subjects and eventually a population for the Enclave to control. The President of the USA at the time was a member of the Enclave iirc. However only slight editing might be needed.. perhaps the Vault was created to house "non-conformist" politicians who were not part of the secret Enclave and were thus "expendable". The Enclave would not have wanted any former US government assets (which are not loyal to them) surviving the war, so it somewhat fits in. But Vault-Tec certainly wouldn't want to kill government officials on their own because they hate the government. Otherwise, nice story.
