Hair pack crash problems

So I have a couple of characters who all have found their perfect hair, sadly, in different hair packs. My warrior uses a style from Fallout hair because Apachi doesn't support white textures (everything is slightly blonde for some reason) and my mage uses Apachi because Fallout has no straight shoulder-length hairstyle. I also have a mod requiring one of the Apachi addons.

 

Anyway, this is basically crashing my showracemenu. I've tried going into an enclosed space, etc, etc. My character is a vampire so the face changer won't help me. What I think I need to do, is go into the creation kit and set all the hairstyles I don't like to NPC only. In my totally unsubstantiated theory, this would make the showracemenu only load the styles I care for and lighten the load, so hopefully the game doesn't freeze.

 

So I've loading Fallout hair in CK, made it the active mod. I see there are entries under Character > HeadPart > female called Extra Part and Head Part. This seems to reference a bunch of files called 00MMHairxx and 00MMHairxxmirror, where xx is a number from 07 to 30. If I go into the properties of these files, there is a checkbox labelled 'playable'. My hope is that this checkbox tells the game whether the hairstyles shows in the racemenu or is NPC only.

 

I am rather worried about screwing up though. What I'm looking for is someone with mod experience to hopefully tell me if I'm on the right track. Do I uncheck the playable option in the Extra Part folder (the mirror files) or in the Head Part folder, or both? Will this achieve what I'm after? Also, is there any way to preview the hairstyle or identify the number ingame? I can't seem to render any of them from the CK. There is an option to edit the model inside the properties window but this just displays a blank 3D plane with no model on it.

 

Any help would be appreciated. I've tried googling every keyword I can think of to customize a hair pack, but have been unable to find the magic words.
