Stability issues in Skyrim

I use the following tools:

-NMM (I wasn't able to install all mods with NMM, some of the files were just too big (example: Immersive Armors), so I just installed them manually.)

(I'm also thinking of switching to MO, but I haven't found a way to swap all my mods from NMM to MO without reinstalling everything.)

-BOSS (I'm not sure what the "Delev, Relev tags" mean. They were already activated in Wrye Bash)

-TES5Edit (I cleaned all the files as indicated in BOSS, except in "LPotD armor.esp". Somehow it wasn't possible, no idea why)

-Wrye Bash (Just recently installed it, but I don't know exactly how to make those "Bashed Patches")

Note: I play Skyrim on the lowest settings that were recommended for my system.

I also turned off Shadows completely and I don't use any mods that change the graphics.

This is a precaution because I fear that I will probably get even more issues on my low end PC.

Ingame I use 4 followers at the moment: Vilja (mod) + 3 Vanilla ones (Marcurio, Faendal, Uthgerd the Unbroken)

I am experiencing following problems:

a) CTDs:

-In intense fights (Dragons, Sigdis Gauldurson in Geirmund's Hall, bandit camps, etc) when I load a save file (quicksave, auto-save and full save).

-When I load a save file (auto-save, quicksave and full save) where I'm sitting in a tent from the Frostfall mod.

-When I'm talking to NPCs, followers, etc

-When I open the inventory from my horse (Convenient Horses) or followers.

-Sometimes just completely random.

b) Strange behaviour:

When I load a save file In which:

-I'm mounted on my horse: My horse moves randomly, flying in the air, etc

-I'm wearing a weapon/ spell: the weapon/spell isn't visible once I load the save file. I have to requip the weapon/spell to make it visible again.

My questions:

1) Is there anything I can do to decrease/fix the issues I'm experiencing?

2) Is my low end PC causing the issues? Or am I just using too much mods?

3) Any general advice to make my game more stable?

Any additional advice in general is always welcome.

Thanks in advance.

Your load order actually isn't that big. I would say this is an 'above moderate' size load order compared to the 'Just got Skyrim, Installed xxx number of mods yesterday, and now my game is crashing' load orders we often see around here.

1) Let's start with the GPU: It's several generations old, so you'll have to do a couple of extra things to make up for it. First thing you can do is to use the Texture Optimizer to compress the textures from mods. Definitely the cloak mods (CoS and WiC) and Deadly Dragon, maybe even 'Immersive Armor.' The other thing you can do is to edit the ini settings. I use to have ini files optimized for my old 9800 GTX+ that Skyrim fried (I was running medium everything and max distance slider settings, before switching to high texture settings because I thought my game was really stable <-- probably what pushed my GPU over the edge). Unfortunately, I deleted them after getting a new GPU. But if you look around you should be able to find some ini suggestions for low end rigs. You should at least be able to get low shadows with decent FPS so the game doesn't look as ugly.

2) Followers: When you say you "use 4 followers" I like to think not at the same time. There are good reasons why the default game allows only one follower at a time. The Creation Engine is horrible at rendering multiple ( R)AI's. It's why Skyrim has the population density of a post-apocalyptic world. A better rig might push that boundary a bit, but it'll never be 'Mount n' Blade: Warband.' Too many AI's on the same screen and the game will become unstable. This may be why you CTD during combat.

3) CPU: too many continually updating scripts will stress your CPU. It should be ok to use one or two (I see RnD and Frostfall, but there may be others), but beyond that, you may get micro-freezes in some areas (Whiterun and Riften markets) and possibly CTDs. So you'll want to keep those types of mods to a minimum.

4) CTD while Loading from a save where your character is near a tent might be related to Frostfall. I can't say for certain because I don't use it, but it seems the most obvious culprit.

5) The esp you cannot clean in spite of the BOSS log message: what do you mean? Do you get an error message when you try to clean it? When you are removing identical to master entries or undeleting/disabling deleted references? Have you checked out the esp's records to see if there are errors? This esp sounds fishy. I'd recommend looking through every record in that esp to make sure it does not contain error records.

6) Anything that adds more spawns and spawn points to the worldspace will make worldspace travel inherently more unstable (how much more unstable depends on what they add and how much of it they add). This is not the fault of the mod, but a limitation of the engine. So mods like 'SkyMo', 'Warzone' (which you don't appear to be using), ASIS. 'SkyMo' is probably the lesser of the three 'evils' here.

7) BOSS tags: Delev and Relev are tags that indicate to Wrye Bash an esp has removed items from leveled lists and/or re-leveled existing items in leveled lists (respectively), in order to specify how Wrye Bash's leveled list merger will handle changes from the mod when it generates a Bashed Patch. The appearance of those tags in the BOSS log do not require any user action other than to verify in Wrye Bash that the esp has in fact been tagged accordingly (and usually they are, unless the modder is inexperienced and does not know about Wrye Bash).

8 ) Horse problems: the most likely culprit would be a horse related mod. But I can say it's not Convenient Horses. CH has been in my load order for a month and I've never experienced the issues you described, so it's probably one of the other horse related mods in your load order.

Would not continue using Skymomod, its no longer on the Nexus, last it was version 10.

Again too many things that alter horses. Cut all but convenient.

You should cut all dragon mods in favor of Deadly Dragons.

As Ripple said your going to have issues with having more mobs on screen, those include followers.

With ASIS you going to have to tweak it's INI files a heck of a lot.

Exclude

Dwanguard and Harthfire.

you will have issues if you don't.

4 GB Ram

pretty much you have to make cuts, just a 1 or 2 overhauls like ripple said above.

Consider UFO, Convinent, Ceredwin, Frostfall, RealisticNeedsandDiseases.esp Active

Ancient Magic, Skyre, and trap overhauls

Deadly Dragons, ASIS, and your various dragon mods most certainly are Overhauls

So basically you have at least 10 overhaul mods and your specs are low.

I don't use nearly that many. I have a better computer and still from time to time face a lot of issues when I'm reckless with trying new stuff.

I'm on a similar MoBo/CPU combo (980 BE on a 4GB DDR2 MoBo) and, while I didn't have any issues with Skyrim back on XP; with Win 7 I see a dramatic decrease in stutter from using GameBooster to shutdown background processes, and Process Lasso to set priorities and affinities. In Process Lasso, my defaults for tesv.exe are Above Normal priority, High IO priority, Cores 1,2,3 (to free up core 0 because it handles IO), and I've got it excluded from being throttled.

Even though your load order isn't that large, it's still pretty aggressive with CH, FrostFall, ERSO, ASIS, and SkyRe. You can try adding the following lines under the [Papyrus] section of Skyrim.ini:

iMinMemoryPageSize=256 '<-- Set this between 128 and 512'
iMaxMemoryPageSize=512 '<-- only bump this up (to 1024) if your game runs best with the min setting on 512'

These settings affect how the game handles scripts in memory.

You have 3 different horse mods installed (and they may or may not be completely compatible, I'm not sure). If all else fails, I'd start trimming the fat. Drop to one horse mod, drop ERSO and see if that doesn't help with dragons, drop FrostFall and test around tents, etc. Basically, after each mod uninstall, go in-game and test to see that A) your save still works properly, and B) how dropping that mod affected your issue.

Thanks for the reply :-)

1.) I downloaded the Texture Optimizer. But when I first ran Ordenader.exe I got an error called "bin/adpdds.exe failed: D3dx9_43.dll" missing.

I googled some and I found a solution: I downloaded + installed DirectX End User Runtime Web Installer.

This seemed to have fixed it.

I used the path: c:\Program Files\...\skyrim\Data (The guide said I needed the "Data" or "Textures" folder: I didn't know which one of those two exactly though)

I also selected the "minimum (safe)" option. Then I ran it and I think it works. I didn't notice any big difference in game though. But I think it was succesfull.

I also did some research on the ini tweaks and i found these ones:

Skyrim.ini

[General]

iLargeIntRefCount=999999

fFlickeringLightDistance=8192

[Display]

fSunShadowUpdateTime=0

fSunUpdateThreshold=2.0

SkyrimPrefs.ini

[Display]

fShadowDistance=2000.0000

fDecalLOD2=1000.0000

fDecalLOD1=500.0000

fLeafAnimDampenDistEnd=500.0000

fLeafAnimDampenDistStart=0.0000

[Decals]

uMaxDecals=40

bDecals=1

bSkinnedDecals=1

uMaxSkinDecals=30

uMaxSkinDecalsPerActor=10

[Particles]

iMaxDesired=300

I'm not sure this will be any improvement. I'm gonna give it a try later.

2.) Yes, I was using 4 followers at the same time. But I'm thinking to decrease that to only 2 followers.

I'm thinking of keeping Vilja and get Celann from the Dawnguard. i'll also uninstall Cerwiden for now (1 mod less!)

I always liked the idea to have a mage, an archer and warrior follower to make fights more intense. Maybe it's just me, but I prefer Gameplay over Graphics.

I like to make the game very challenging and adding followers gives it a bit more depth in my opinion. But I rather have less followers and less CTDs than more followers and more CTDs.

This was probably one of the main reasons why I had so many CTDs in Dragon fights. (3 Dragons from both MD and DD + 4 followers + atronachs from my followers + Random NPCs in the neighbourhood (Giants, Mammoths, Bears, etc) might have been quite taxing when it comes to memory)

On top of reducing my amount of followers to 2, I'll also change DD to only spawn 2 Dragons max.

3.) I'm only testing RnD at the moment. When Last Seed (hunger, sleep, thirst mod from the same person who made Frostfall) will be ready, i'll swap to that.

Because it uses the Perks from SkyRe.

4.) It probably is. I'm going to look this up. Might be best to not save in tents for the moment.

5.) BOSS tells me that there's 1 ITM dirty edit in the LPotD Armor.esp. So, I open TES5Edit and only select LPotD Armor.esp. After loading, I right-click the LPotD Armor.esp in "Form ID" near the upper left corner of the window.

Then I select "Apply Filter fof Cleaning". After that's finished loading, I right-click LPotD Armor.esp again but this time I select "Remove Identical to Master records". A message (asking me i'm completly sure) pops up and I click yes.

Then I get the following message: [Removing "Identical to Master" records done] Processed Records: 99, Removed Records:0, Elapsed Time: 00:00.

As there are no UDR records found by BOSS, I left that untouched.

Am i doing anything wrong? My knowledge of TES5Edit is limited though. A while back i watched Gopher video about cleaning esps, but beyond that I don't really know that much about it.

http://img5.imageshack.us/img5/9185/tes5editlpotddirtyedit.png

6.) I was already considering to uninstall ASIS (due to issues with SkyRe), or at least disable "Customized AI" and "Increased Spawns" in the Patcher. So I'll only use it to give potions to NPCs.

7.) About Wrye Bash: I'm using a lot of mods which adds armor and cloaks. Would it be better for the stability to make a bashed patch?

8.) I think I found out what's causing it. Each time I use "Horse Call", all my followers will spawn next to me on their horse, except for Vilja. She uses her own spell to summon her horse, Bruse. When she does this, my horse gets pushed aside and starts moving strangely.

I think I made a save file after this happened. The bug could have been saved on that file as well. Maybe that's the reason?

9.) One additional question: I'm planning on downloading/installing more mods in the future. And I considering to swap from using NMM to MO. I read somewhere that it's possible to just uninstall the mods in NMM and then load all the archived mod files in Mod Organizer. Is it really that simple? Or should I do something else?

http://img855.imageshack.us/img855/9959/nmmtomo.png

Thanks in advance

Sorry for my English by the way. It's not my main language.

Odenador: at the bottom, where it says 'Resize down (reduce textures....)', check mark it and select 'if > 1024.' You can also change that to 'if > 512' if you find you get even better performance (I did it for all the AV textures). Remember to select and check mark 'BSA' when you want to compress BSA files.

That means TES5Edit didn't find any duplicate to master records, but did you also remember to undelete/disable deleted references? This is actually more important CTD prevention wise. If TES5Edit tells you that it didn't find any deleted references, then the BOSS log message for that plugin may be outdated. I'd still click the '+' sign and check out the records in the esp just to make sure.

7.) About Wrye Bash: I'm using a lot of mods which adds armor and cloaks. Would it be better for the stability to make a bashed patch?

You are already using a Bashed Patch, right? I see it in your load order. Did you use Wrye Bash to rebuild the Bashed Patch so it can merge conflicting leveled lists from the 'give more items to NPCs' mods in your load order (e.g. immersive armour, cloaks of skyrim, WiC, etc.)? You'll need to rebuild the Bashed Patch every time you modify your load order, just like the other compatibility patches (ASIS).

Could be. I don't use Vilja, so I couldn't say. The weird horse behaviour is happening now even when you have just one NPC follower or none? If it only started after the incident you described, then it's a likely culprit.

There are features in MO that facilitates migration to MO from NMM. I just never used it because I uninstalled NMM a long time ago and reinstall all my mods through MO. But one of the things some MO users have said that they've been doing is to migrate gradually. They set up MO, set up all the Skyrim utilities as executables in MO, and launch the game through MO. But when they install new mods and update old mods, they uninstall the old version from NMM (thus removing those mods from their game data folder), then install the new version through MO. The idea is to gradually reduce the number of mods installed into their data folder. There may be an easier way than this that I am not aware of. You can look through MO's support thread and see if anyone there has fully tested the migration features.

MO is not as simple to use as NMM, because it has so many more functionality. But like most of these utilities, using them doesn't require much 'technical know-how', it's really just a matter of familiarity with the interface and wrapping your head around how it works differently from previous mod managers. MO really needs a video series of some kind....

Last thing about ASIS. If all you want left is the 'NPC heal themselves' thing, you might as well remove ASIS entirely. ERSO's NPC overhaul has self-healing MOBs. The only problem with that plugin is that it will likely conflict with any NPC mod you use (but you can make a compatibility patch for it in TES5Edit), but it won't tax your game stability like ASIS.

Thanks for the replies :-) I'm actually learning lots of new stuff. ;-)

Is it possible to use Game Booster + Process Lasso together with SKSE (or SKSE loading from Mod Organizer)?

Even though your load order isn't that large, it's still pretty aggressive with CH, FrostFall, ERSO, ASIS, and SkyRe. You can try adding the following lines under the [Papyrus] section of Skyrim.ini:

iMinMemoryPageSize=256 '<-- Set this between 128 and 512'

iMaxMemoryPageSize=512 '<-- only bump this up (to 1024) if your game runs best with the min setting on 512'

These settings affect how the game handles scripts in memory.

I just added those to the Skyrim.ini. :-) Gonna see if they make any difference.

Done ;-) Gonna check if this works.

I also ran the "Undelete and disable deleted references".Sadly, with the same result: Processed Records: 99, Undeleted: 0. :-/

I'll keep that mod disabled till it gets updated (which is soon, according to the mod author).

I'm also not the only one with that issue. Other ppl are also experiencing this same issue, it seems.

I remember when I first installed a Wrye Bash, it made me a Bashed Patch. But I haven't merged anything since then. I did some googling and I found this guide on how to properly make a Bashed Patch: link

I followed all those steps but it seems only 1 mod is mergable: moveitLWT.esp. However, I thought CoS, WIC, IA, IW would also be mergable?

About Mod Organizer:

I downloaded and installed it. I went through all the tutorials and I must admit, it looks quite promising.

Only 1 problem: adding the executable files. I added BOSS.exe but that didn't seem to work. Then I added BOSS GUI.exe but I get a message telling me:

"MO is locked while the executable is running." Same thing happens when I try to run Wrye Bash through MO.

I'm planning on dropping following mods:

-Cerwiden

-Ancient Magic

-ASIS

-Saberhorses

-LPotDHorse

-Everything from Divine Aegis

-DartTrapHarder

-LeftHandRings

-ERSo 04 Mighty Odahviing

-ERSO 04.2 Mighty Durnehviir

-ERSO 05 Dovah Holy Book

-RaceMenu

Maybe it's better to try a clean reinstall as well?

Because of the Dragonborn DLC and I'm planning on more modding, I'm considering to upgrade my old GPU and Processor. But I still have to think that through.

Kind regards

Andre

Edit: I upgraded my version of MO. I downloaded the upgraded version and extracted it in my MO folder. BOSS seems to work now. Yay! :-)

Ok, there's two parts of a bashed patch. The important part is Bash Tags. Any mod you have tagged, will have the appropriate records (pertaining to what tag you use) merged into the Bashed Patch. You don't have to chose to merge them or anything, just rebuilding your patch with the tags on incorporates them. Right now the only tags known to work properly are Delev and Relev and they both deal with levelled lists.

The second part, is merging whole plugins into the Bashed Patch. You can only do this with plugins that have zero conflicts with other plugins in your load order. This feature is in place to help cut down on large load orders; however, it may not be working correctly with plugins that contain certain subrecord groups. The Tes5Dump/Edit team is still working on decoding some of the new subrecord groups and until they've got it all deciphered and changes have been made to Wrye Bash using this merging feature may cause issues with your saves, etc. To err on the side of caution, I'd recommend not using the whole plugin merge at all.

Remember, every time you change your load order, you need to rebuild your Bashed Patch. Even if you didn't add or remove a mod with Delev/Relev tags.

Is it possible to use Game Booster + Process Lasso together with SKSE (or SKSE loading from Mod Organizer)?

You can add a link to SKSE in GameBooster to launch SKSE through it's interface.

Alternatively, you can boost your desktop at anytime (ctrl+alt+b by default; ctrl+alt+r to return) so long as GameBooster (gbtray.exe) is running.

Process Lasso runs in the Background, and is independent of SKSE/GameBooster/etc..
