Menu Crashes and Freezes

Recommended Posts

When I try to open my in game menu it sometimes crashes. If it doesn't crash then it will freeze when I try to equip something and I have to alt+ctrl+dlt to close the game. I'm not sure what's happened and disabling various mods and trying again does not seem to make a difference. I'm out of ideas. Please help and thank you.

1) esp cleaning. Download TES5Edit and follow the instructions to clean the esp's flagged by BOSS as containing 'dirty edits.'

2) always read mod installation instructions carefully, for example:

Cloaks - No Imperial.espNote: Use only one cloaks*esp

Contains dirty edits: 14 ITM, 0 UDR records. Needs TES5Edit cleaning. (http://www.creationk...uide_-_TES5Edit)

Cloaks - Player Only.espNote: Use only one cloaks*esp

and

1nivWICCloaksNoGuards.espWarning: Use only one WICCloaks esp.

You should only use one optional plugin. You don't need any optional plugin if you want the cloaks to spawn on NPCs normally (because the Bashed Patch will handle that). If you've already disabled these, you can take the next step and simply remove them (unless you actually want the cloaks to be 'player only'/'craft only').

3)

mwCraftableCirclets.esp Active

Omegared99-Compilation.esp ActiveNote: Obsolete. Upgrade to latest version

Make sure you've upgraded.

4) Are you using any texture replacers? For the world map for instance? Did you recently uninstall SkyUI?

1) I did but it doesn't always reflect that in BOSS

2) You should read closer. Only one of them has "Active" beside it. I copied and pasted from BOSS's webpage that opens when you run it.

3) I've made personal modifications to that one and through trial and error (starting a brand new game without that mod at all) it doesn't help. If I have to I will update it but only if I must.

4) I am using clothing texture replacers, body texture replacers and the official texture replacers. Nothing for the world map. I do not use SkyUI and never have.

Thank you for taking the time to try to help me.

If they've been cleaned properly the message should not appear in the BOSS log. I'd recommend cleaning them again to make sure.

I did read closely. I told you that if they've been disabled, you can take the next step and remove them. There's no point having them inactive and in the data folder other than to extend the game loading time.

If the CTD is reproducible (every time or at least most of the time you open inventory menu to equip items, or whatever), the easiest way to track down the culprit is to disable mods in groups. But since you said you already tried it and still could not identify the culprit, the problem may be unrelated to mods. Good luck.

I thought that as well so I had Steam validate my files and it found some missing. I think that the CK messed with some of the game's files. The Construction sets do that to Morrowind and Oblivion and the G.E.C.K. does it to FO3 and New Vegas so why not the CK to Skyrim? Maybe that will fix it and this will all be redundant.

I'll remove them. It can't hurt anything, they aren't active.

And I'll try cleaning them again. Thank you. ^_^

Too specifically address your issue

You are loading too many hair mods at once.

When creating a new character or using ~Showracemenu command

The game loads all possible hairs, tints, eyes, and tats

your game is trying to load something in the area of 250 hair models into active memory

Result is out of memory error CtD

Known issue

-Only run with one hair mod at a time

ApachiiHair.esm Active

ApachiiHairMales.esm Active Yes even though your character is male/female all those hairs are loaded

numenume Hair.esp Active

Whoops

I addressed an issue that you will discover soon, but not the issue you are having now

The issue your having now is you cannot equip an item without crashing sometimes.

This is becuase you have downloaded an armor mod that requires you to use a specific skeleton

I use a lot of BBP armors aka Better Bounce Physics

-What happens is sometimes the behavior is (most times) the game just outright crashes when the skeleton does not have the breast bones for BBP.

-Of course it's entirely possible to still use the model

-It's also entirely possible that you have a mod that isn't BBP but still uses a bone that's not present on the skeleton

data\meshes\actors\characters\characterassets\Skele's are here

You can get a wide variety of skeletons there's something like 250 different ones on the Nexus.

Check out XP32's Maximized Skeleton

Note

-It can also be a bad mesh

-an example of a bad mesh is when the author incorrectly labeled a NiNode of the armor set he/she made

-The only way for most user's to test this is too put an armor on and if it crashes consistently upon putting it on and off again multiple times that mesh is bad.

-tip you can check them with nifskope

http://forums.nexusmods.com/index.php?/topic/502344-armor-mashup/ <---not totally off topic but there's some Nifskope advice.

Edit

Note 2

If it's none of the above I would like you to remember that

-Opening the menu via the TAB key is part of the games feature's to AUTOSAVE

-This has impplications

-When the game saves it uses most of the available memory of the Read\Write portion of your hard disk

-You have a fair number of script heavy mods

-Scripting is handled by the Read\Write of the HardDisk, as well as Texture Fetching for the Video Card

-What this would mean is you've hit your limit on textures\scripts so when you hit TAB the game Autosaves and CtD's as it's cap has been exceeded

-There are only a few ways around this

1st turn off autosaves, it's almost always a bad thing on heavy modded games

2nd easiest too uninstall or optimize your textures

....Defrag your hard disk Nice thing always better performance, needs to be done regularly on modded games

3rd uncheck but do not remove some scripted mods....Very important that you use available "Stop Quest" commands if any provided by mod author.

The hair mods work fine. I can't add any more but the ones I have work fine even in showracemenu. I'm looking into removing some extra textures that I'd added recently to see if that helps. It could easily be that I'm trying to push the system past its 4GB limit.

Defragged, though it didn't really need it can't hurt anything. ^_^

I'm very careful about the armor mods I added. They all claim to be for the body mods I use, or they are after I'm done making slight adjustments (which I'm also very carefule about, it is so easy to mess with something else by accident). And the freeze happens on any armor, weapon or whatever. I click it and then it freezes and that's when I can get the menu to open without crashing. *sigh*

For some reason everytime I ask Steam to verify my files it finds like 2GB missing.

And now after having had Steam recover these missing files and defragmenting it crashes upon launch. Which means that something important isn't where it should be as far as the game is concerned. Ack!

I have given up. I've uninstalled and am doing a clean install and eliminating a significant number of mods, updating everything to the absolute latest and am not installing anything complex until it has been proven to work with Dragonborn, which I intend to get. Just little things, hair and body mods mostly. If I don't go crazy and limit how many of those I use and do not use a boat load of texture replacers then it should be okay.

But from this and the handiest post ever Only You Can Prevent Forest Fires I've learned a lot about what I can and cannot do and what the game can and cannot handle no matter how super awesome my PC is.

Thank you all for your assistance and for providing me with useful information. May someone else read this and not repeat my mistakes.

Cheers. ^_^

If you are going to do a clean install, I recommend using the Mod Organizer rather than traditional mod installers. MO will not install mod contends directly into your game data folder, thus negating the need for 'reinstall' of the game just to clean mod files.

I probably won't get Dragonborn until at least a few weeks after it's release. I am not discouraging anyone from getting it right away (Beth needs the sale figures....), but it's just seems more sensible for people running large load orders to wait for the Unofficial Dragonborn Patch, and enough time for mods requiring an update for the new DLC to occur.

Thanks for the tip. Neat program. I just might have to give this one a go. Yeah I'm just going to use the body mods and (more selectively chosen) hair meshes and a few armor mods because those didn't break when I got Dawnguard. Anything that requires scripts I'm just not installing until a week or more when people who swear by the mods give the all clear that nothing broke in Dragonborn and/or the mod authors have released a patch. Unfortunately that means no UFO for me but thems the breaks.

Again thanks for helping and for the advice. Definately looking into MO, just glancing at it's description on the page and it sounds pretty handy.

Kudos to everyone who tried to help, by the way.
