How do I update player home mod without losing items?

It would be great if someone would help me with this.

I'm want to update my player home mod without it removing the items stored in it.

At the moment I have to tell users of the mod to remove their items first before upgrading.

Is there a solution?

I thought that removing items is only recommended if:

A) Uninstalling house mod

B) Author of the mod is deleting some boxes etc. inside house

You should be fine if you are just adding new stuff in, and not removing old stuff.

When I place items in a chest and save while in the player home, then upload my latest update via Nmm, upon starting the game from last save my character is transported to the sleeping giant inn and all my items in the chest are gone.

I've made just minor changes to the mod not effecting the chest and no idea why I end up in the tavern?

Actualy I dont think I have explaied the problem very well.

I created and uploaded to Skyrim Nexus - Skov Klan Hjem - A player home.

As the author I would like to make updates for people who have downloaded and installed it.

When I uploaded an update that may for example, adds a chair, anyone who installs it as an update will find it overwrites everything and all their stored items are gone.

They will also find themselves in the Sleeping Giant.

Did you change ID of the interior when adding the chair by any chance?

As it does sound like that.

If you change the ID, problems occur.

Anyhow, I am not too familiar with editing house mods, but I have used plenty and i've never had any problems with them.

No. It's always been aaSkovKlanHjem. But I can see how that would mess thing up if it were.

I just don't no how other mod authors managed it where I have sadly failed

Ok. Having another look at my mod I think you have hit the nail on the head. I renamed the esp. from SkovKlanHjem - PlayerHome v1_0 to SkovKlanHjem - PlayerHome v1_1 then uploaded it.

Would that then cause the lost of items left in SkovKlanHjem - PlayerHome v1_0 because I have renamed my mod to SkovKlanHjem PlayerHome v1_1

I thought just changing the version number at the end was the right thing to do.

But if I'm right version numbers are handled in NMM appearing in the manager and not in your data folder, so I should of left as SkovKlanHjem - PlayerHome and not add vesion numbers to it.

Is this right? Have I just made a noob error?

Yup, that's the problem. While the ID per se may not have changed, the fact that it's coming from a different .esp file (i.e. different file name) means that, for all intents and purposes, it's a different ID.

Don't put the version on your .esp's file name; at most, include it in the file details, but really all you need to do is change the "version" field on Nexus.

In your case, I would revert the file name back to v1_0, re-upload (replacing the v1_1 file), and just change the file version on Nexus to 1.1. This will allow users who may have been using 1.0 but haven't yet updated to 1.1 to still keep their stuff, and not get transported to the inn if they happen to save inside the house. (Folks who have updated already will probably not get their lost stuff back, except via console commands.)

Edit: To add, I would drop the version from the file name altogether when you release version 2.0, and include upgrade instructions specifying that all items will be lost if your players don't first remove them (and themselves) from the house. For any future 1.x updates, though, I'd leave the v1_0 to make it easier on your users.

What a muppet I am! I just didn't realise. Thought I was being cleaver. What a mess. I just wanted to get this so right and not add grief to those who have uploaded it.

Thanks Kromey. Thats what I will do. Great advice.
