ArchAngelAlien
This is actually extremely common. There is tons of threads with this exact same issue. http://forums.nexusmods.com/index.php?/topic/646995-understone-keep-ctd-with-3-different-mods/
ripple
when trying to enter Understone Keep it refuses to load, and just sits on the black screen showing my level. I really don't understand what is causing this.Did you revert to stock ini settings or are you using modified ones? Because what you are describing here is not a CTD, but a lockup of the game where you are stuck in the loading screen indefinitely (and not even the screen with pictures, but just the blank screen with smoke). ArchAngelAlien
I just tried to verify the integrity of my files. The only thing I have changed in the default INI is the FOV. Out of 10 attempts. 7 CTDs and 3 infinite loading loops. I googled this problem, and it's massive. Tons of people have had this issue. Nobody seems to have a solution for my issue, as I use mods they never mentioned to turn off. People have said everything else in the game works for them fine, but this one area causes CTDs. I know it's not my video card.
ArchAngelAlien
Turned off Ruins Clutter Improved texture mod, and it allowed me to enter. Took 2 steps forward, and instantly CTDs.
ripple
I never had problems with Markarth (in fact, that's where I am in game right now). However, Understone Keep and other areas in Markarth are apparently a performance stressing areas (due to the fog), like the Riften Market (which is worse because of the densely populated AI's). I don't recognize any mods in your load order with specific locational edits to that cell. Are you using ENB?[edit] Ah ok. See I don't even know how many and which texture mods you are using. Trim your texture mods! These texture mods could contain problem textures. The game looks pretty good just with the Hi-res DLCs, maybe some of amidian's textures. ArchAngelAlien
Sorry, broke off for some lunch. I don't think I am using anything that adds anything to the cell of Understone Keep. Let me try again without my fancy texture mods. I am not using any ENBS Edited February 15, 2013 by ArchAngelAlien
ArchAngelAlien
Okay so it looks like it's one of the Skyrim HD -2k Textures doing it. I still need to narrow it down, but when I turn them all off, I am able to enter and exit without issue (still need to test to make sure it's 100% stable) I have my texture order like this: Skyrim - HD - 2K TexturesB TownsSkyrim - HD - 2K TexturesB DungeonsSkyrim - HD - 2K TexturesB LandscapeSkyrim - HD - 2K TexturesB RiftenSkyrim - HD - 2K TexturesB Misc *---I am not sure which one it is, I tried isolating them with no real luck as I had random results. It was pointing to Misc being the culprit, but when I loaded it without it, it CTD inside. With them all disabled, I can get in and out so it won't halt my gameplay. I had a CTD outside Whiterun earlier, I wonder if my texture mods are not installed in the right order. *---I noticed these 2k texture are overwriting alot of files from the unofficial patches. Are these suppose to go before, or after them? I can't find any information on load order. Edited February 15, 2013 by ArchAngelAlien
ArchAngelAlien
Hey Ripple. Look at this picture very carefully. http://i.imgur.com/MMyeDE8.png What do you see wrong here?
ripple
Depends. Does 'Skyrim HD - 2K texturesB Misc' actually contain conflicting textures with WATER? The top half of the list is not displayed and it looks like the 'overwritten' texture files are listed in reverse alphabetical order. If it doesn't than it's quite interesting because I've never seen that before. I don't know about the HD textures replacers, but you shouldn't bother with the 2K version. The hi-res DLC pack textures are already 2K. Texture replacers...trim!
ArchAngelAlien
It was in reverse order. Improved NPCS was BELOW that file, yet it says it was overwriting files from Improved NPCS. Moving the file around reset it. I have a feeling this is going to cause CTDs in other places as well. You can really see a big difference when you don't run the 2k textures. The regular DLCs only cover so much. I can get around my problem for now and disable them to get inside the Understone Keep. If I get random CTDs I will just come back and rid of them. For now I am going to finish my load order and see if I can have any luck with SkyRE. Here is some screenshots I took during my adventure of 4 Skyrim reinstalls.
