My guess is that a part of the game is stored in those bad sectors. And none of the other game.

You may try to verify the Steam Cache - if the bad sectors have vanilla game parts stored there, they may be able to replicate those in another sector. But if the bad sectors hold saved games or modded stuff you are likely SOL.

Surely by trying to load my saves on the reinstall next week I'll be able to determine if they are okay or not? That and wouldn't they be corrupted and unloadable in the first place?

 

I did verify the game cache on the weekend, and one file had to be reacquired...

 

EDIT: I verified again (reinstalled today...dunno why, next week I'll have to do it again!), and one filed had to be reacquired again...not good, is it?

 

I believe it was InstallScript.vdf, on volume F (that's on the drive that is okay *touch wood*).
