ChainedDragon
I solved this problem :DAs someone said before, this is game shadow drawing distance. So objects and textures at greater distance than shadow drawing distance are not receivin shadows at all. All u have to do is Increase fShadowDistance in Display preferences in SkyrimPrefs.ini from 2000 (i had this) to for example 20000. I dont know how this will affect performance on your computer, i have no fps loss but i have bloody good machine. But notice that if u are running ENB, the whole world may be darker now, depends on your ENB settings. I was looking for this fix as well, but it seems like i solved this myself. So here u go dudes, it helped me so it should help ya.Andross2000, I am waiting for my cookies now  Edited November 25, 2013 by ChainedDragon
acornco
^ the above dosnt work, no cookie for you! its a fog problem rather than a lighting/shading one. i couldn't find a true fix but i found a cludge. the console command "setfog X,X" changes how the fog catches light and its density. it also removes the fogs retreat!(that's the part we want) using console command "setfog 0,40000" will remove the fogs retreat. 30000-50000 work well. play around with it, 5k is pea soup. also, it dosnt save. you have to re enter it when you load AND it might add fog to places that shouldn't have fog. i havnt played around with it much. other settings are 0,0 = no fog(looks really bad) and 0,80000 or more = very light fog(atmosphere). on a final note, i don't know how to re add the fogs retreat except to restart the game. *small update* in terms of x,y the x controls the fog retreat distance from the camera. y still seems to be density. 0,0 dosnt turn off the fog, it resets the standard fog distance/density. 0,1000000(yep, a million) will more or less turn off the fog but retain decent atmosphere lighting. i made a pair of console command batch files(look it up), one for on and one for off for quick toggling, so i don't have to type all those zeds. Vamphaery
I now have this issue. After playing the game for 100+ hours, it just started in Raven Rock. (And no, it was never visible in Raven Rock before.) It is precisely as presented by the video at the start of this thread. I've tried various ini tweaks, etc. and nothing works. This is really frustrating as I had gotten the game to look and perform perfectly on my system, and now this comes out of nowhere. As near as I can tell, the problem began after being forced to go into offline mode on Steam. Is there a possible cache sync issue perhaps, since no one has been able to identify or remedy the issue? UPDATE: More and more mysterious. I verified the cache, and a single file was found that could not be validated. It was replaced. Then when I started the game, it re-detected my GPU. "Great," I thought, "Now I have to reset everything." I adjusted my settings back to Ultra, max distance on all sliders, etc. Ensured my mods were all still there. Started the game and... ... the problem was completely gone! I was so relieved. "Well, that fixed it!" I thought. Nope. Upon waiting for the first time, the problem reemerged. Now this is truly strange. It means that there's something about some basic, fundamental (possibly hardware level?) setting that is causing this to appear and disappear, and some flag or setting in the game itself that continually causes it to return. Good news: this means it's probably a very specific thing that can be prevented from happening. Bad news: good luck EVER finding what that might be. We're probably screwed. :( Edited October 3, 2014 by Vamphaery
colinswrath
Vamphaery use the above fix it works VERY well!!!! I spent ages trying to find a fix until he posted this fix here. He deserve a trillion cookies for this! :))
Shurah
I've had the same problem. The following mod resolved it: http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/31312/?tab=2&navtag=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nexusmods.com%2Fskyrim%2Fajax%2Fmodfiles%2F%3Fid%3D31312&pUp=1The console command posted above also worked. In general, any mod that edits dragonborn weather may work.

I come to necro this to say that THIS WORKS for me in 2024 still! Shadow pop-in distance can easily be changed in the ini, but it doesn't affect the fog layer. setfog 0,50000 is my preferred setting so far, it doesn't take long to type it out real quick when booting up the game and the weathers still have varying fog levels. It's less dense/thick than the default value I think, switching back and forth during foggy weather implied that default setting is a lot thicker than the 50k. I can also confirm that 5k is peasoup. xD Don't reccomend. lol (also note that it's written with a comma and not a point!) I hope that this necro will help other people to stumble over this thread FIRST instead of having to read through half a dozen others that have no answer.
